ABRAHAM ANDEMARAIAM FROM TOXTETH SHOCKS COMMUNITY AFTER CRUEL GEES KILLING IN WARRINGTON

In a disturbing incident that has left residents and animal lovers in shock, Abraham Andemariam, a man originally from Toxteth, Liverpool, was found guilty of callously running over a group of geese in Warrington. The incident, which took place in July 2023, was captured on a Ring doorbell camera and has sparked widespread outrage due to the apparent cruelty involved.

According to court proceedings, Andemariam, born around 1992 and residing on Asbridge Street in Toxteth, was seen on footage driving along Omega Boulevard in Great Sankey, Warrington. At approximately 07:00 BST on the 15th of July, he deliberately drove through a flock of geese, resulting in the death of seven of these birds. Witnesses at the scene reported being deeply distressed by the suffering of the injured animals, which were left dying in the road after the collision.

The court heard that the geese involved were Greylag Geese, a species commonly seen in the Great Sankey area. The prosecuting attorney, Tom Quirk, described the incident as one marked by a blatant disregard for animal life. He emphasized that Andemariam continued on his way to work after the act, showing no concern for the suffering he caused.

One witness recounted seeing the distressed birds writhing on the ground, with injuries so severe that skin was torn from their limbs. The witness also noted that there were passengers inside Andemariam’s vehicle, and that residents nearby were visibly upset by what they had witnessed. The scene was further distressing due to what was described as aggressive driving behavior by Andemariam.

The horrifying event was caught on a Ring doorbell camera, which played a crucial role in identifying Andemariam as the driver. When police arrived at his workplace, they observed feathers on the front of his vehicle’s bonnet, confirming his involvement. As a consequence of his actions, Andemariam was dismissed from his employment with Amazon.

In September 2023, Andemariam was convicted in his absence on seven counts of intentionally killing a wild bird, specifically a Greylag Goose. He was also found guilty of driving without due care and without a valid MOT certificate. The court heard that Andemariam had admitted to the offences during police interviews, but he was unable to attend the initial hearing due to personal circumstances, including the recent death of his 16-year-old brother. He later surrendered himself to authorities after discovering he was wanted.

During the sentencing, the court acknowledged Andemariam’s remorse, noting that he was visibly upset when shown CCTV footage of his actions. He pleaded guilty and received a suspended sentence of 12 weeks in jail, which will not be enforced unless he commits further offences within a year. Additionally, he was ordered to complete 50 hours of unpaid work, participate in 10 days of rehabilitation activities, pay a victim surcharge of £154, and cover court costs of £120. A collection order was also issued for deductions from his benefits. Furthermore, Andemariam is banned from driving for six months as part of his punishment.

This case has drawn significant attention to issues of animal cruelty and reckless driving, with many calling for stricter penalties to prevent such incidents in the future. The community in Toxteth and Warrington continues to reflect on the importance of respecting wildlife and ensuring responsible behavior on the roads.
