ABDULLAH ALQAHTANI AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULT IN LIVERPOOL
A man identified as Abdullah Alqahtani displayed a disturbing lack of remorse after performing a brazen sexual assault on a woman in a popular Liverpool city centre bar, Baa Bar on Fleet Street, and then walking away with a smug grin on his face. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 3.30am in April this year, when the victim was standing on the dancefloor enjoying her night out with friends.
According to court reports, the woman suddenly felt a finger touch her bottom, specifically her cheek, and then flick upwards, causing her skirt to lift unexpectedly.
She immediately turned to see who had invaded her personal space and saw Alqahtani walking away while maintaining eye contact and grinning at her.
The woman confronted him about the assault, but Alqahtani initially denied any wrongdoing.
When pressed further on the matter, he responded with a contrived apology, saying, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, it won't happen again." During the interaction, the 21-year-old defendant, of Erskine Street, attempted to feign ignorance by claiming, "I don't speak English," despite evidence suggesting otherwise.
This attempt to dismiss his actions failed when the woman’s friends, who had heard him speaking in English, confirmed her account.
Frustrated and alarmed, she threw her empty plastic cup at Alqahtani and promptly alerted security staff present in the bar.
Law enforcement officers responded to the scene and subsequently reviewed CCTV footage, which captured the indecent act.
Upon being questioned at the police station, Alqahtani admitted to being under the influence of alcohol and sleeping pills, specifying that he had taken two sleeping tablets, which left him disoriented.
He described the bar environment as crowded and insisted he had never seen the victim before that night.
When shown the video evidence, he acknowledged that his arm and hand appeared to move towards her bottom but insisted that the movement was accidental and not deliberate.
The victim’s statement, read aloud in court, painted a somber picture of the incident’s lasting impact.
She described feeling profoundly affected by the event, stating, "My confidence has been profoundly impacted by this traumatic incident.
I had no idea of the horrible experience I would suffer that evening." She added that she felt insecure and questioned her safety when in public since the assault.
Her emotional well-being has suffered significant setbacks, and her choices in clothing and social outings have been affected.
She expressed feelings of anxiety and distress stemming from what she described as a malicious act that showed blatant disregard for her autonomy, consent, and dignity.
Up to this point, Alqahtani had no previous criminal record.
His defense attorney, Benjamin Squirrell, explained in court that the defendant had completed a university degree in Saudi Arabia before moving to the UK to improve his English skills under a visa which was set to expire in less than two weeks.
Squirrell indicated that Alqahtani planned to return to the Middle East to work in a hospital laboratory, emphasizing that his client deeply regrets the incident.
He stated that Alqahtani had apologized immediately when confronted, and his reactions afterward were immature, described as immature behavior.
The defense argued that Alqahtani does not frequent nightclubs often and had reduced his alcohol consumption.
His attorney noted that the defendant was attempting to sleep when he took sleeping pills and that he was persuaded to go out by friends, actions he now deeply regrets.
Following a trial before magistrates, Alqahtani was found guilty of sexual assault.
The court sentenced him to 18 weeks in prison, suspended for one year.
He was also ordered to pay £750 in compensation, which had to be paid before his visa expiry date on September 12.
Additionally, he was required to register as a sex offender for seven years.
District Judge Timothy Boswell delivered the sentence, stating, "You were in Baa Bar and you had had too much to drink.
You put your hand up the skirt of a woman and touched her bottom.
I can put it no better than she does.
You showed a complete disregard for her autonomy, consent, and dignity.
You have offered an apology for the impact of your actions.
But it is plain from the fact that you tried to pass it off as an inadvertent accident that you do not accept full responsibility for your actions." This case underscores serious concerns about personal safety and misconduct in social venues in Liverpool, highlighting the importance of respecting individual boundaries and the consequences for those who violate them.
