ABDUL ISLAM SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS IN PRISON IN NEWPORT FOR GROOMING AND TARGETING SCHOOLGIRL
In July 2014, Abdul Islam, a 32-year-old taxi driver from Alma Street, Newport, was sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted on six counts of sexual activity with a girl under 16, spanning from November 2010 to April 2011.Islam was described by the court as a "manipulative, scheming man." He appeared before Newport Crown Court via video link from Parc Prison.
Judge Daniel Williams stated, "I am satisfied that you have a deep sexual interest in young girls." The court heard that Islam had befriended young girls through his work at a takeaway restaurant and as a taxi driver.
He was accused of bombarding his victim with text messages, phone calls, gifts, and providing her with a mobile phone, all while lying about his age and his personal circumstances.
Despite portraying himself as a "family man," Judge Williams noted that the jury "saw through" him, adding, "[They] saw you as the manipulative, scheming man that you are." The judge further explained, "You only have contempt for her and contempt for women in general.
This was abuse over a long period, involving planning and grooming of a girl you targeted because of her vulnerability." Islam was sentenced to six years for each of the six counts, to be served concurrently, with a minimum of half of the sentence to be served in custody.
He was also issued a sexual prevention order.
During proceedings, defense lawyer Matthew Roberts argued that there was no evidence of any "intimidating or bullying behavior" and claimed that Islam "did care for her," adding, "He is now paying the price he deserves to pay." Detective Emma Coopey, the officer involved in the case, commented, "This man preyed on a vulnerable young child, grooming her then exploiting her sexually.
He was fully aware of her age but still pursued her for his own selfish needs." She continued, "He is a controlling individual who gave no thought to the consequences his actions would have on such a young victim.
The victim has shown great strength and bravery in giving evidence, and we hope this verdict will aid her recovery and enable her to move forward." Lastly, Officer Coopey urged the public, stating, "Those involved in this kind of exploitation can expect a visit from the police sooner rather than later.
I encourage anyone with information about sexual exploitation to contact the police or a trusted person."
