ABDUL FROM MAJID RAHMAN – NEWPORT CHILD RAPE IMAGE SHARER JAILED IN PORTHCAWL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community, Abdul, formerly known as Majid Rahman, has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of possessing and sharing explicit images involving children. The incident unfolded in Newport, where Rahman previously served as a city councillor representing the Victoria ward for the Labour Party. In May 2022, Rahman was taken into custody following a police raid on his residence on Corporation Road in Newport. During the search, law enforcement officials uncovered a disturbing collection of over 100 illicit images and videos depicting child abuse on his iPhone and Apple laptop. Rahman reportedly admitted to investigators that he was “addicted to pornography,” a statement that was met with grave concern given the nature of the evidence.
The police investigation revealed that Rahman had actively shared these heinous images through social media platforms, specifically Facebook. Further probing uncovered that he had engaged in online chats with other individuals involved in similar criminal activities, during which he falsely claimed to have been sexually abused as a boy and even alleged that he had sexually assaulted a child himself. These claims were part of his attempts to justify or perhaps conceal his own disturbing interests.
When questioned by police, Rahman denied any sexual interest in children, maintaining his innocence. However, the evidence against him was overwhelming. Rahman, who is now 34 and resides on Marine Terrace in Porthcawl, pleaded guilty to multiple charges. He admitted to distributing 12 Category A and one Category B indecent images of children, which are classified as the most severe types of child exploitation material. Additionally, he confessed to possessing a total of 102 indecent images, including 30 Category A, five Category B, and 67 Category C images, involving both boys and girls.
The court heard that Rahman’s actions caused significant harm and distress to the victims depicted in the images. Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, the Recorder of Cardiff, addressed Rahman directly during sentencing, stating, “There was discernible pain and distress suffered by some of the children depicted. You had an active involvement in a network or process that facilitated or commissioned the creation or sharing of indecent images of children, and there was a large number of different victims. It is clear you have a sexual interest in children.”
As a result of his crimes, Rahman was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison. The judge also ordered that he register as a sex offender for life, emphasizing the severity of his actions and the ongoing risk he poses to society.
It is noteworthy that Rahman resigned from his position as a Newport city councillor in October 2022, citing “personal circumstances” as the reason for his departure. His resignation followed the police investigation and subsequent charges, which have now culminated in his imprisonment, marking a significant and troubling chapter in the community’s ongoing fight against child exploitation.
