EIGHT MEN JAILED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN DERBY

In September 2012, eight men from Derby were sentenced to prison for their roles in a series of child sexual abuse cases involving underage girls.

The men, acting independently, targeted vulnerable teenage girls aged between 14 and 17, many of whom came from care homes or troubled backgrounds.

The victims were offered money, drugs, and alcohol in exchange for sex.

During their trial at Derby Crown Court in July, five of the men were convicted of paying for the sexual services of a minor, while the remaining three admitted to the same offense.

Mark Adaoui, aged 40 from Derby, received a seven-year prison sentence for paying for sex with a child.

Stefan Godfrey, 44 from Pinxton, Ijaz Ahmed, 35 from Derby, and Anthony Lambert, 51 from Derby, were each sentenced to six years for similar charges.

John Shaw, 55 of Kniveton; Colin Simpson, 55 of Cresswell; David Shardlow, 56 of Derby; and Ian Yeoman, 60 of Derby, were all sentenced to four years in prison.

Judge Gosling addressed the court, stating: “None of you enticed these girls into prostitution, but you nurtured them.

You were superficially kind to them for your own purposes, to satisfy your middle-aged desire to have sex with girls who were plainly not of age.

You were prepared to pay a paltry sum.” The investigation spanned two years and was triggered after Derbyshire Police became concerned for the safety of girls seen on Derby’s streets.

Some of the girls were met on the streets, while others were introduced through friends.

The court revealed that gifts offered to these girls included cannabis, cuddly toys, vodka, and takeaway food.

Officers identified 15 girls involved in the case; seven chose to participate in the prosecution—five as victims and two as witnesses.

Between July and November 2010, 14 men were arrested as part of the operation.

It was found that many of the girls knew each other, although the men were not connected.

Details of convictions include: Mark Adaoui, of Carlton Road, Derby, guilty of two counts of paying for child sex, and one of supplying cannabis; Ijaz Ahmed, of Becher Street, Derby, guilty of three counts of paying for such services; John Shaw, of Kniveton, guilty of two counts, but not guilty of assault; Anthony Lambert, of Warren Street, guilty of two counts; Stefan Godfrey, of George Street, Pinxton, guilty of two counts; Ian Yeoman, formerly of Mortimer Street, Derby, now of Birmingham, admitted 12 counts including paying for child sex, sexual activity with a minor, and possessing indecent images; Colin Simpson, of Old School Lane, Creswell, guilty of six counts; and David Shardlow, of Charlbury Close, Derby, admitted to nine counts of paying for child sex and possession of indecent images.
