ZULFIKAR TAI'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN LEICESTER: CHILD SEX ABUSE SHOCKS COMMUNITY
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the Leicester community, Zulfikar Tai, aged 43, was convicted of multiple sexual offenses involving two young girls he was entrusted to care for.The offences spanned several years, from 2008 to 2016, and involved heinous acts of child abuse that only came to light after a brave young girl, then just six years old, found the courage to write an essay at school as a desperate plea for help.
According to the prosecution, Caroline Bray, during a police investigation, a second victim, now 16, came forward to reveal that she had also been subjected to sexual assault while she was sleeping in her own bed.
This incident occurred when Tai was a guest at her family’s home, further highlighting the betrayal of trust involved in these crimes.
The court heard that Tai had molested the first girl on several occasions, starting when she was six, and continued until she was approximately ten years old.
Leicester Crown Court was told that the abuse was uncovered after the young girl’s school essay, which served as a cry for help, prompted authorities to investigate.
During the trial, the jury found Tai guilty of six counts of sexual assault on a child under 13, as well as two additional charges related to the older girl.
Despite denying all allegations, Tai was convicted and subsequently sentenced to a decade behind bars.
In his sentencing remarks, Recorder Steven Evans emphasized the profound impact of Tai’s actions on the victims’ lives.
He stated, “You’ve significantly affected the lives of two young people.
One was a child and the other a young adolescent coming into adulthood.” The judge also highlighted the emotional toll on the victims, noting that their families had placed their trust in Tai, only to have that trust shattered by his betrayal.
Recorder Evans described how Tai, who resides on Thurlby Road in Leicester’s Spinney Hills area, had exploited his position of trust to commit these crimes.
The court detailed how the second girl was asleep when Tai entered her bedroom and indecently touched her, an act that caused her immense terror.
The judge remarked on the horror of the situation, saying, “One can only imagine her terror as you entered her bedroom, secretly and stealthily.” The victims’ testimonies were described as compelling, with both girls having to relive their traumatic experiences in court.
Their emotional distress was evident, and the jury’s verdict reflected the genuine suffering they endured.
Tai’s defense attempted to discredit the victims and their families, but the court found the evidence convincing.
Following his conviction, Tai, who married in 2016 and has two young children, was subjected to strict legal restrictions.
He was placed on indefinite sexual harm prevention orders and restraining orders to prevent any contact with the victims or their families.
The court also revealed that Tai faces deportation to India after serving his sentence, as he had no legal right to remain in the UK.
Both victims have been profoundly affected by the abuse.
The first girl, now 14, described her ongoing emotional scars in a victim impact statement, stating that she considers Tai a “monster figure” and continues to suffer nightmares.
She expressed feeling “broken” by the ordeal.
The second girl, now 18, shared that she thinks about what happened daily, which makes her feel “sad” and “different” from her friends.
She also reported losing confidence and feeling isolated due to the trauma.
Leicester’s community and the victims’ families have expressed their support and hope for healing in the aftermath of this tragic case, which underscores the importance of vigilance and trust in protecting children from such heinous acts.
