Basford Rapist
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of North Staffordshire, Yadwinder Singh, a 26-year-old resident of The Avenue in Basford, was convicted of heinous sexual offenses involving a young girl. The incident, which took place in January 2020, involved a series of escalating acts of abuse that culminated in Singh raping the juvenile victim in a brutal assault that has left lasting scars.

According to court reports, Singh initially engaged in inappropriate touching and kissing of the young girl, who was underage at the time. The victim, overwhelmed and distressed, attempted to resist and cry out for help. However, Singh responded with violence, pinching her and pulling her hair in an effort to silence her and prevent her from seeking assistance. The abuse intensified as Singh pushed her onto a bed, stripped her of her clothing, and proceeded to commit rape. These acts of violence and sexual assault were detailed during the trial, which revealed the extent of Singh’s cruelty and predatory behavior.

Singh was initially sentenced to five years and six months in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court last year. However, this sentence was later challenged by the Office of the Attorney General, The Rt Hon Geoffrey Cox QC MP, who deemed the punishment 'unduly lenient.' Following an appeal hearing, the Court of Appeal increased Singh’s sentence to seven years and six months, emphasizing the severity of his crimes and the lasting impact on the victim. The Attorney General issued a statement expressing his satisfaction with the increased sentence, highlighting the long-term effects of Singh’s actions on the young girl, who was described as vulnerable at the time of the assault.

Singh was found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual activity with a child after a trial held in October 2020. Prosecutor Jonathan Dickinson confirmed that Singh had groomed the girl prior to the assault, taking advantage of her trust and vulnerability. Dickinson also noted that Singh seized the opportunity to commit the rape once he believed the girl was sufficiently groomed and isolated.

As part of his sentence, Singh will be registered on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities. Additionally, he has been issued a 10-year restraining order that prohibits him from making any contact with his victim, aiming to protect her from further harm and harassment.

In a related and deeply emotional statement, the victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, expressed her ongoing struggle to move forward with her life. She described feeling as though she had lost her sense of self and was unable to trust others after the assault. Her statement conveyed the profound psychological impact of Singh’s actions, including feelings of emptiness, fear, and shame. She recounted how she feared judgment from her peers and how the experience has haunted her, making it difficult to speak about her trauma and find closure.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Dean Kershaw addressed Singh directly, describing the brutality of his actions. The judge stated, “You pushed her on a bed, took her clothes off, and raped her. You tried to tell her girls do that kind of thing. I have heard her give evidence and her statement — it is clear that young lady is hurting inside.” Singh was visibly emotional during the proceedings, breaking down as the judge delivered his verdict.

In addition to his prison term, Singh was handed a 10-year restraining order, which prevents him from contacting or approaching his victim in any way. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which the justice system views such crimes and the importance of safeguarding victims from further harm in the aftermath of such traumatic experiences.
