ELDER ABUSER JAILED FOR ASSAULT AND THREATS IN CAERPHILLY
A 71-year-old pensioner named William Williams subjected his ex wife to a brutal assault at her home in Caerphilly and verbally threatened her by saying, "you deserve to die, you're a b****".
During the attack, he threw a coke can at her and held her down, hitting her in the face twice with the can.
The victim suffered injuries to her eye socket and chin and described the emotional toll, stating she "breaks down emotionally" at least twice a week and experiences flashbacks and fears about her safety.
The incident occurred on May 26, 2023, after a day of drinking together, which escalated into an argument where the victim called the police and was then assaulted.
Williams admitted to being under the influence and to the assault but had previously been of good character.
In court, he was sentenced to nine months in prison suspended for 12 months, a 15-day rehabilitation requirement, a £300 fine, £200 court costs, and a three-year restraining order.
The judge emphasized the gravity of domestic violence threats and highlighted Williams' previously decent life, stating, "It's sad to see a 71-year-old man who up until now has led a constructive and caring life towards others, is in the Crown court dock guilty of a serious case of domestic violence...
(The victim) has the right to be safe and feel safe in her own home, nothing she did on that occasion in any way justifies what you did to her."
