WILLIAM TURNER FROM BURNTWOOD SENTENCED FOR YEARS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN SHOCKING CASE

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Burntwood, William Turner, a 60-year-old man residing on Bridge Cross Road, has been sentenced to 32 months in prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing a young girl over a prolonged period.

Turner's heinous actions began when the victim was only seven years old, with him initiating indecent contact that persisted for several years. The abuse was characterized by inappropriate touching and other sexual misconduct, which left a lasting impact on the young girl. The case came to light after the victim, now an adult woman, finally decided to report the abuse to the authorities in December of the previous year.

During the court proceedings, prosecutor Miss Laura Hobson detailed the disturbing nature of the offenses. She revealed that on one occasion, Turner had given the young girl a bottle of wine to drink, which resulted in her becoming sick. Despite the abuse being ongoing for years, the victim initially confided in her parents during her teenage years, but no legal action was taken at that time. It was only when she reached adulthood that she felt compelled to seek justice by reporting the crimes to the police.

When confronted with the allegations, Turner did not deny his actions. He admitted to seven specific charges of indecent assault, which the court found to be proven beyond reasonable doubt. His admission came as a shock to many, given the severity of the accusations and the long duration of the abuse.

Judge Stuart Rafferty QC addressed Turner directly during the sentencing, condemning his actions in strong terms. He stated, “You, in drink, with her at your flat, did things to her that you should not. What you did had an element of sexual gratification. [You were] a man who was lonely and in drink sought comfort with that child. You took away her innocence. You have sunk low – you should be ashamed and I hope you are.”

Supporters and members of the community have expressed their outrage over the case, emphasizing the betrayal of trust involved in such offenses. The court's decision to imprison Turner reflects the seriousness with which the justice system treats crimes of this nature.

In his defense, Turner’s lawyer, Miss Wendy Miller, highlighted that the offenses occurred many years ago when he was considerably younger. She also noted that Turner was unusually honest and frank with the police during their investigation, which was taken into account during sentencing. Despite this, the court emphasized the gravity of his actions and the lasting harm caused to the victim, ultimately sentencing him to a prison term that underscores the severity of his crimes.
