WILLIAM SMITH OF COVENTRY SENTENCED TO 22 YEARS FOR ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS IN COVENTRY AND BEDWORTH
In a harrowing case that has shocked the Coventry community and beyond, William Smith, a 56-year-old man from Purcell Road, Courthouse Green, Coventry, has been sentenced to a total of 22 years in prison for his heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse and rape of young girls.The sentencing took place at the Crown Court in Leamington, where the court heard disturbing details about Smith’s predatory behavior and the extent of his offenses.
Smith, who has a long history of offending, initially denied the allegations of raping and indecently assaulting a young girl from Bedworth.
Despite his denials concerning this particular victim, he pleaded guilty to multiple charges involving four other young girls.
The court was informed that Smith had been convicted previously of indecent assault as a juvenile in 1973, and again in 1999, when he assaulted two girls while babysitting.
These prior convictions underscored a pattern of predatory behavior that spanned decades.
During the trial, it was revealed that Smith had been convicted of raping or attempting to rape three other girls, in addition to the victim from Bedworth.
He also admitted to raping and attempting to rape one of these girls in the mid-1990s, as well as raping another girl and attempting to assault a third.
The court heard that Smith’s actions were calculated and manipulative, often involving befriending the families of his victims under false pretenses.
Judge Richard Griffith-Jones described how Smith would target vulnerable families, especially those with young girls who were neglected or trusting, to gain access and carry out his abuse.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Griffith-Jones emphasized the dangerous nature of Smith’s conduct.
He stated, “You seemed to be able to identify and befriend parents of small girls who either had some sort of problem or were neglectful or were trusting of you.
The whole friendship was designed for you to wheedle your way into a vulnerable family situation where there would be a little girl who could gratify your illicit sexual desire, who would not have the strength to repel your repulsive advances.” The judge further condemned Smith’s actions, asserting, “You got a perverse sexual gratification from taking innocence away from little girls.” Given the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to children, the court imposed an extended sentence.
Smith will remain on license until he reaches the age of 85, a measure intended to protect the public from any future offending.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
Judge Griffith-Jones concluded by describing Smith as a “dangerous paedophile” and expressed concern that he would likely reoffend if given the opportunity, stating, “There is no doubt in my mind that you are a dangerous paedophile.
You pose a significant risk of committing similar offences in the future.” In relation to the Bedworth victim, the judge remarked that Smith had effectively imprisoned her to facilitate his sexual abuse, raping her multiple times.
The court acknowledged that Smith’s admissions to some of his crimes, made before police evidence was presented, demonstrated a level of remorse or at least acknowledgment of his guilt.
Prosecutor Glyn Samuel highlighted Smith’s criminal history, noting that he had been convicted of indecent assault as a juvenile and again in 1999, with additional admissions of raping and attempting to rape other young girls in the 1990s.
Defense counsel Kristina Montgomery QC suggested that Smith’s lengthy incarceration would likely diminish the risk he poses once he is released, especially considering he will be of pensionable age by then.
However, the court’s primary concern remained the safety of children and the need to prevent further harm from this convicted sex offender.
