Halewood Rapist
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the Halewood community and beyond, William Ormandy, aged 31, was convicted of a heinous sexual assault that took place near Liverpool Lime Street station. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, February 6, when an 18-year-old woman was walking alone towards the taxi rank close to the station.
According to court reports, Ormandy approached the young woman just before 2am, initiating a conversation by complimenting her appearance and asking about her destination. He followed her as she moved through the area, persistently engaging her with comments such as, “you’re gorgeous,” and inquiring where she was headed. His behavior quickly escalated when he asked her for a kiss, which she refused. Undeterred, Ormandy then forcibly grabbed her in an attempt to kiss her, causing her to feel increasingly threatened.
Prosecutor Cheryl Mottram, presenting evidence at Liverpool Crown Court, detailed how the victim expressed her desire to simply get home. She told Ormandy she lived with her mother and was only 18 years old. Despite her protests, Ormandy continued to follow her, pulling her into a nearby service alleyway near the station. There, he persisted in trying to kiss her as she begged him to let her go. The young woman decided to walk towards London Road, seeking safety and the next available taxi rank. It was during this walk that Ormandy committed the assault, raping her before leaving the scene.
As she attempted to leave, Ormandy called out, “come here,” but she managed to escape in the opposite direction. Fortunately, three women who encountered the distressed victim intervened. One of them refused to leave her side, flagged down a taxi, and ensured she was taken home safely. The incident prompted a thorough investigation by British Transport Police detectives, who worked tirelessly to locate and apprehend Ormandy.
On Wednesday, February 16, Ormandy voluntarily surrendered himself at St Anne Police Station. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of rape. During police interviews, he claimed that he had kissed the victim three times consensually and denied any assault or rape. However, the victim’s account painted a different picture, revealing the profound psychological and emotional toll the attack has taken on her.
The young woman shared her ongoing struggles, explaining that she now only leaves her house when accompanied by family members. She described her heightened anxiety, her need to constantly know her family’s whereabouts, and her sleep disturbances, often sleeping in the same bed as her sisters. She also expressed how the trauma has devastated her educational aspirations, stating that she had hoped to attend university but has since failed her interviews. Her future, once filled with ambition, now feels uncertain and bleak.
William John Ormandy, of Derby Court, Church Road, Halewood, appeared before Liverpool Crown Court via video link on March 18. He pleaded guilty to the charge of rape. Judge David Potter sentenced him to a prison term of eight years and three months, with an additional four-year extended license. Furthermore, Ormandy was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Potter emphasized that Ormandy had deliberately targeted the vulnerable young woman, isolating her with apparent premeditation. The court was informed that Ormandy has a lengthy criminal history, including 13 convictions for 29 previous offenses, many involving violence against women. Notably, he was convicted last year of assaulting and harassing a former partner and was under a community order at the time of the recent attack.
Judge Potter expressed concern over Ormandy’s attitude towards women, highlighting his violent past and the high risk he poses to both strangers and known individuals. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of his actions and the ongoing threat he represents to the community, especially women, given his history and recent conviction.
