Lumbertubs Rapist
In a series of disturbing developments, William Montgomery, a 44-year-old resident of Rillwood Court in Lumbertubs, Northampton, has seen his prison sentence significantly increased following new allegations of child abuse. Montgomery, who was already serving an 18-year term for the sexual assault of a young boy and girl, will now serve an additional two years after admitting to abusing another child during the 1980s.

The case against Montgomery gained further attention when he was convicted at Northampton Crown Court in February of raping a young girl. This conviction followed a trial in which Montgomery was found guilty of multiple sexual offenses. Prior to this, Montgomery had already pleaded guilty to 13 counts of indecent assault against a boy in the 1980s, a period that ended with his incarceration for burglary in 1985.

After Montgomery’s initial conviction and the subsequent media coverage, another victim came forward. She revealed that she had also been subjected to abuse by Montgomery during the 1980s, when she was between six and nine years old. This new revelation led to Montgomery being charged with 12 counts of sexual indecency with a child. The court heard that Montgomery’s actions spanned several years, causing significant trauma to his victims.

Judge Michael Fowler sentenced Montgomery to an additional two years in prison, to be served consecutively with his existing 18-year sentence. This means Montgomery will serve a total of 20 years for his crimes, reflecting the severity and repeated nature of his offenses.

In a separate case from February 2011, Montgomery, then aged 43, was handed an 18-year jail term for the horrific rape of a six-year-old boy. During that trial, Montgomery admitted to multiple sexual offenses against the young boy, which had taken place during the 1990s. The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, kept quiet about the abuse for nearly two decades until a chance encounter last year prompted him to report the crimes to the authorities.

The prosecution, led by Piers Reed, detailed how Montgomery had also taken advantage of a woman, now in her twenties, who was babysat by him during her childhood. She revealed that Montgomery had sexually abused her on occasions when he was supposed to be caring for her. She kept her silence for almost 20 years before finally coming forward and reporting the abuse to the police.

Judge Ian Alexander QC described Montgomery’s actions as profoundly disturbing, emphasizing the horror inflicted upon his victims. He stated, “You have been found guilty by the jury of raping a girl who was aged somewhere between five and seven years – it is not certain. It went over a period of time, several months. This is the sort of sexual activity that can only bring horror to any civilised human being.” The judge made it clear that there was no mitigation for Montgomery’s crimes, noting that Montgomery had refused to accept responsibility and had required victims to relive their trauma in court.

As part of his ongoing punishment, Montgomery was also issued with an indefinite sex offences prevention order and will remain on the sex offenders’ register for the rest of his life. Despite the verdict, Montgomery’s defense argued that he still denies the allegations of raping the young girl, citing issues such as alcohol abuse that they claim have affected his later years. However, the court’s decision stands, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the lasting impact on his victims.
