KIRKCALDY MAN FINED FOR BIRD CRUELTY WITH UMBRELLA
William McMahon, aged 68, from Kirkcaldy, was found guilty of intentionally or recklessly injuring a fledgling gull by striking it with an umbrella, an act which led to the bird's leg being broken.An investigation by the Scottish SPCA revealed that McMahon used a large golf umbrella to attack the bird in his garden.
Witnesses saw him take the umbrella from his car and approach the gull chick.
He then leaned over the fence and struck the bird when it ran into an adjacent garden.
The Scottish SPCA took the injured bird to their National Wildlife Rescue Centre, where it was discovered to have sustained a severe fracture.
Due to the bird’s suffering, the veterinarians decided to euthanize it to prevent further pain.
McMahon was sentenced in the local sheriff court on a Monday to pay a fine of £600 for this animal cruelty.
The Scottish SPCA described the act as 'callous' and welcomed the conviction, emphasizing that it was a deliberate act of cruelty against a defenseless young bird.
