WILLIAM MCCANCE'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN GLASGOW: DECADES OF ABUSE REVEALED
In a harrowing case that has sent shockwaves through Glasgow’s East End, William McCance, a well-known shopkeeper, was convicted in October 2016 of heinous crimes committed over a span of several years, dating back to the 1980s and early 1990s.The 57-year-old, who operated a car parts shop near the bustling Barras Market in Glasgow’s Gallowgate area, was found guilty of sexually abusing a young girl and her younger brother, crimes that have left deep scars on the victims and the community alike.
McCance’s criminal activities took place primarily at a residence in the Dennistoun neighborhood of Glasgow, where he subjected the girl to a series of increasingly severe sexual assaults.
The abuse began when she was just nine years old and continued until she was 15.
The jury heard distressing evidence of how the abuse escalated over time, including instances where McCance would lift the girl out of her bed while she was sleeping and commit acts of rape on the carpet of her home.
The case came to light many years later, after the victim, demonstrating remarkable courage, contacted the NSPCC.
This intervention prompted a police investigation that uncovered the extent of McCance’s predatory behavior.
It was revealed that he had also targeted a young boy, who was between seven and eight years old at the time of the abuse.
The boy, who testified during the trial, expressed his pain and denial of fabricating stories, stating, “I’ve spent my life trying to forget what he did to me.” During the court proceedings, McCance maintained his innocence, claiming that he was shocked by the allegations and had no idea why they were made against him.
His defense lawyer, Dale Hughes, described him as a man of “impeccable character” and argued that he was “effectively a broken man.” Despite these claims, the judge, Lord Burns, was unequivocal in his condemnation, stating that “these activities have caused incalculable harm.” The judge also noted that McCance showed no remorse and refused to accept responsibility for his actions.
In addition to the criminal conviction, McCance was sentenced to serve eight years in prison and was placed on the sex offenders register for life.
The court also deferred sentencing until the following month to allow for further background reports.
As he was led away in custody, McCance waved to friends and family, a stark reminder of the gravity of his crimes and the lasting impact on his victims.
The victims, who are unable to be named for legal reasons, expressed their relief and sense of justice following the verdict.
They stated, “We are delighted with the outcome of the case against William McCance, to be found guilty on all four counts.
This has been hanging over us since we were young children, and we are relieved that he has now been brought to justice so we can begin to move on with our lives.” Overall, the case has highlighted the long-lasting effects of childhood abuse and the importance of speaking out, even decades later.
The community in Glasgow, particularly in the areas of Baillieston and Dennistoun, continues to grapple with the revelations, but the conviction marks a significant step toward justice for the victims and a warning to potential offenders that such crimes will not go unpunished.
