William McCance

Glasgow Sexual Abuser

November 2016 Barras shopkeeper jailed for raping schoolgirl and abusing her younger brother A SHOPKEEPER convicted of raping a 15 year-old has been locked up for eight years. William McCance attacked the teenager, who only revealed what happened to her years later when she called the NSPCC. McCance today returned to the High Court in Glasgow after earlier being convicted of rape. He was also found guilty of indecently assaulting the girl, starting when she was nine. The 57 year-old was further convicted of sexually abusing a boy, who was aged between seven and eight. The crimes occurred at a house in Dennistoun, Glasgow, between 1984 and 1991. A judge heard today how McCance – who ran a car parts shop near the city’s Barras Market – still protested his innocence. In a pre-sentencing report, he claimed the accusations came as a “shock” and that he had “no idea why they made these allegations”. But, Lord Burns told the pervert: “These activities have caused incalculable harm. “You accept no responsibility and show no remorse.” McCance, of the city’s Baillieston, waved to friends and family in court as he was lead to the cells. A jury heard harrowing evidence of how the abuse of the girl escalated until she was eventually raped. A probe was sparked years later after the victim decided to call the NSPCC, who then alerted the police. It emerged McCance had also preyed on a boy. He told the trial: “I’ve spent my life trying to forget what he did to me.” Dale Hughes, defending, today claimed McCance had been a man of “impeccable character”. The lawyer added: “This is someone who is effectively a broken man.” McCance was also placed on the sex offenders list for life. October 2016 A WELL-KNOWN shopkeeper from Glasgow’s East End has been convicted of raping a schoolgirl 26 years ago. William McCance, 57, of the Baillieston area of Glasgow was found guilty of targeting his 15-year-old victim, as well as her younger brother. The beast, who ran a car parts shop close to the Barras Market, in Glasgow’s Gallowgate, abused the pair between 1984 and 1991. Jurors at the High Court in Glasgow also convicted McCance of indecently assaulting the girl from ages nine to 15, at a house in the city’s Dennistoun area. The abuse escalated to the victim being lifted put of her bed while she was sleeping, and raped on the carpet. Last night the victims, who cannot be named for legal reasons, spoke out to welcome the conviction. They said: “We (both victims) are delighted with the outcome of the case against William McCance, to be found guilty on all four counts against him. “This has been hanging over us since we were young children and we are relieved that he has now been brought to justice and we can move on with our lives.” McCance’s crimes only came to light when his female victim plucked up the courage to speak to the NSPCC, who contacted police on her behalf. In evidence, her brother, who was abused by McCance between the ages of seven and eight, denied making up stories about the paedophile, and said: “I’ve spent my life trying to forget what he did to me.” McCance claimed that both victims were making up stories about him and denied any sexual abuse. His defence counsel, Dale Hughes, said: “He has a family and has been hard-working at his London Road business for many years.” Judge Lord Burns placed McCance on the sex offenders’ register, deferred sentence until next month for background reports and remanded him in custody.
