Motherwell Child Sexual Abuser
In December 2020, William Main, a 67-year-old man from Plains, Motherwell, found himself at the center of a disturbing criminal case involving allegations of child exploitation and breach of bail conditions. Despite being under strict bail restrictions that prohibited any contact with minors, Main was caught engaging in inappropriate behavior towards a ten-year-old girl, raising serious concerns about his compliance with legal orders and the safety of children in the community.

According to court reports, Main was scheduled to be sentenced after a series of troubling incidents that unfolded earlier that year. The first major incident occurred in September 2020, when he appeared before Hamilton Sheriff Court to admit to arranging a meeting with a person he believed to be a 13-year-old girl, with the intent of engaging in sexual activity. In reality, this individual was part of a vigilante group known as Maximum Exposure UK, which conducts sting operations to catch potential predators. Main also confessed to sending indecent messages and explicit images to this person, further illustrating his inappropriate intentions.

The sting operation took place between November 25 and 30 of the previous year. Vigilantes had set up an online profile under the alias Katie Quinn, claiming to be a 13-year-old girl. Main initiated contact, asking if she “fancied a sugar daddy,” and during subsequent conversations, he repeatedly pressed for a meeting. He offered £60 in exchange for explicit photographs and made suggestive comments, including “Stop playing games. Be daddy’s little girl,” and inquired if she would go to bed with him, even suggesting “having fun in the back of my car.” He also expressed his desire to excite her with “wandering hands” and warned her not to tell anyone, citing their age difference as a reason to keep their interactions secret.

Further, Main sent a video to the undercover profile showing a female performing a sex act, which heightened the severity of the allegations. The planned meeting was scheduled for November 30, but instead of meeting the girl, Main’s home was visited by members of the vigilante group. When questioned by police, Main claimed he was planning to meet the girl for a kiss and a cuddle, believing she was older and being led on by her claims of being 13. He was taken into custody at that time and has remained in detention since.

In addition to the September incident, Main’s criminal history includes a previous arrest in October 2020, when he was caught by the same vigilante group at his residence on Fife Drive, Motherwell. He had moved to Wishaw by then, residing on Marshall Lane, but had since changed address again. During the investigation, police found evidence of his online conversations and explicit material, which further implicated him in the case.

Prosecutor Jennifer McLaren detailed the disturbing nature of the online chats, where Main repeatedly asked if the girl “fancied a sugar daddy,” and offered money in exchange for explicit images. He also fantasized about the girl wearing “nice, sexy undies” and allowing him to strip her, revealing his predatory mindset. The police advised Main to leave his residence for his own safety after the vigilante group’s claims, and subsequent investigations confirmed his intentions to meet the girl for sexual activity.

As of the latest court hearing, Main has been held in custody since his arrest in October. His case is scheduled for sentencing on December 8, where he faces multiple charges related to child exploitation and breach of bail conditions. The court has deferred sentencing until that date to allow for background reports and a comprehensive risk assessment. Main, who has no prior convictions, remains under continued bail conditions pending the outcome of the sentencing process, which will determine the severity of his legal repercussions and potential penalties for his actions.
