November 2005 Sex offender dies after taking ill in jail An Elderly sex offender has died after being taken ill in a north-east jail. William Kelly was transferred from Peterhead Prison to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on Thursday, and died yesterday morning. The 74-year-old had been serving a 10-year sentence for a string of offences – including rape and indecent assault – against two young girls. He was jailed at the High Court in Inverness in July, 1999. Kelly, of Portree, Skye, committed the offences over a 17-year period, starting in the 1960s. Grampian Police and Kelly’s next of kin were informed of his death. William Kelly, from Portree, was found guilty at the High Court in Inverness of five charges, including rape and sexual assault. The court heard Kelly committed the offences over a 17-year period beginning in the early 1960s. His name will now be placed on the sex offenders’ register.
