WILLIAM HARVEY FROM NORWICH SENTENCED FOR YEARS OF ABUSE AGAINST YOUNG GIRLS IN NORWICH
In a disturbing case that has shocked the Norwich community, William John Harvey, aged 73, of Bates Green, Norwich, was brought before Stafford Crown Court to face serious allegations of sexual abuse involving two young girls. The court proceedings revealed a pattern of systematic and prolonged abuse spanning over seven years, from 1977 to 1984, during which the victims were between the ages of seven and fifteen.
Harvey was charged with six counts of indecent assault related to these two girls.
The court heard that he had repeatedly subjected one of the girls to sexual abuse and rape, while the other was also victimized.
However, the prosecution decided not to pursue the charge of rape against Harvey, citing concerns over the likelihood of securing a conviction.
The victims, after much deliberation, chose to accept Harvey’s guilty plea to the charges he faced, believing that this would help bring some measure of closure to their traumatic experiences.
During the trial, it was disclosed that Harvey had employed intimidation tactics to silence one of the victims.
He reportedly told her that if she ever spoke out about the abuse, he would hurt her and her family, and that no one would believe her if she tried to report the crimes.
Such threats were part of a pattern of manipulation and control that Harvey used to silence his victims.
Additionally, a third individual who was also a victim chose not to give evidence in court due to personal reasons, which meant that Harvey was not prosecuted on any additional charges related to her.
Following the court’s deliberation, William Harvey was sentenced to a total of ten years in prison.
The sentence was structured so that he would serve seven years behind bars, with the remaining three years on extended licence, subject to strict conditions.
Furthermore, the court mandated that Harvey must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, a measure designed to monitor and restrict his activities post-release.
This case underscores the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse and highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and support for survivors in Norwich and beyond.
