WILLIAM HARMAN FROM WESTON-SUPER-MARE SENTENCED TO 22 YEARS FOR CHILD ABUSE IN BRISTOL
In a case that has shocked the community of Weston-super-Mare, William James Harman, aged 42 and residing on Baker Street, was convicted of a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of a young girl.The offences, which included multiple acts of rape and other forms of sexual assault, were committed against a girl who was under the age of 13, highlighting the severity and depravity of Harman's actions.
Harman's trial took place at Bristol Crown Court, where he was found guilty of a total of 80 separate acts of abuse.
The court heard that his crimes were not only sexually violent but also meticulously planned, with Harman recording some of his acts, which added to the disturbing nature of his offences.
The victim, whose identity remains protected, endured these horrific assaults until she finally confided in her teacher, bringing the abuse to light.
Following his conviction, Harman was sentenced in February to a lengthy term of 22 years in prison.
The judges described his conduct as 'monstrous' and emphasized that he deserved every day of his sentence.
In addition to his prison term, Harman was classified as a 'dangerous offender,' a designation that led to an order for him to serve an extra six years on extended licence after his release, ensuring ongoing supervision and restrictions.
On July 6, via a video link from prison, Harman attempted to appeal his sentence, seeking a reduction.
However, the appeal was firmly rejected by a panel of three senior judges—Judge Martyn Zeidman QC, Lord Justice Hamblen, and Sir John Royce—who upheld the original 22-year term.
During the hearing at the Court of Appeal in London, Judge Zeidman stated that the original sentencing judge was justified in concluding that Harman posed a high risk of harm to children.
He further noted that Harman exhibited a strong sexual attraction to children, with no insight or remorse demonstrated for his actions.
The court also considered the aggravating factors of the case, including the significant planning involved and the fact that Harman had recorded his crimes.
His legal representatives argued that the sentence was excessively harsh and that Harman was not dangerous, but these claims were dismissed.
Judge Zeidman reaffirmed that the severity of Harman's crimes warranted the lengthy sentence, reflecting the horror inflicted upon the young victim.
During the sentencing earlier this year, Judge Julian Lambert described Harman as a 'wicked monster' who deprived the girl of her innocence and joy.
The judge expressed that public outrage over such crimes is understandable and emphasized that retribution plays a vital role in sentencing for such heinous acts.
The court made it clear that there was no justification for treatment or rehabilitation outside of prison, given the nature of Harman's offences and the danger he poses to society.
