WILLIAM GALLAGHER FROM DERRY AND CATFORD JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN THE 1960S
In a case that has spanned decades, William Gallagher, a Catholic priest originally from Derry and later residing in Catford, London, was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Derry Crown Court for the sexual abuse of two young sisters. The abuse, which occurred nearly 35 years ago, has brought to light disturbing allegations that have finally been addressed through the judicial system.William Bernard Gallagher, aged 56 at the time of sentencing, had been working in England since his ordination in 1962. His address was listed as Catford, London, indicating that he had been living and working in the UK for many years. The charges against him included six counts of indecent assault, which he admitted to, involving the two girls over a period of five years, from January 1960 to December 1964.
The court heard that the abuse took place within the girls' own home, adding a layer of betrayal and violation of trust. Crown prosecutor Mr. Ken McMahon detailed that the assaults began when the victims were just nine and ten years old, highlighting the severity and the long-lasting impact of Gallagher’s actions. The case has been a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and the enduring consequences of abuse, even when allegations surface many years after the events occurred.
