WILLIAM BRUNDLE'S SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE CASES IN NORTH SKELTON AND TEESSIDE

In a series of disturbing criminal cases, William Brundle, a man from North Skelton, has been convicted of heinous acts of child abuse spanning over three decades. The severity of his crimes has led to lengthy prison sentences and lifelong restrictions aimed at protecting the public, especially vulnerable children.

On Friday, February 22, 2013, Brundle was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison after being found guilty of abusing four children over a period of more than thirty years. The court heard that Brundle, a former artilleryman, had committed these offenses despite maintaining his innocence and showing no remorse for his actions. The case was brought to light after a trial last month, during which a teenager testified about being raped and sexually assaulted by Brundle. The court was also informed that in October 2011, Brundle had previously been sentenced to six years for abusing three other children.

The court proceedings revealed that the fourth victim, upon learning of Brundle’s recent conviction, contacted police to report her own abuse. Prosecutor Sarah Mallett detailed the allegations, emphasizing that Brundle, residing on Wharton Street in North Skelton, East Cleveland, continued to deny any involvement in the assaults against his victims.

Judge Tony Briggs addressed Brundle directly, stating, “It is perfectly plain you are yet to accept responsibility for your offending. You do not appear to have any insight or acceptance of your responsibility. I think it is necessary and proper for the protection of the public and the prevention of further offending.” As part of his sentence, Brundle was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was prohibited from having unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 16.

The court detailed the nature of the abuse, including how Brundle raped a girl after indecently touching her and muffling her protests. Defense lawyer Jason Pitter acknowledged that Brundle’s offenses were not isolated, but argued that the passage of time should be considered in sentencing. The judge, however, emphasized the lasting impact on the victims, particularly highlighting the trauma experienced by the girl who was assaulted. Judge Briggs remarked, “She protested and you put your hand over her mouth to silence her. It was a very nasty, unpleasant and serious incident. Although it may be that a number of factors have gone to explain her troubles in later years, I have no doubt at all that this particular incident was a major component of that.”

Earlier, in October 2011, Brundle was convicted of a series of sexual offenses against three young girls, some dating back to the 1970s. The jury found him guilty on eight counts of indecent assault, and he was subsequently sentenced to six years in prison. Judge George Moorhouse described Brundle as a “predator of children,” emphasizing the gravity of his actions and the importance of protecting young girls and women from such predatory behavior.

Brundle’s criminal record also includes a lifetime ban from working with children and an indefinite sexual offences prevention order, which restricts him from having unsupervised contact with minors. He is also required to register as a sex offender for life. Detective Constable Paul West of Cleveland Police’s child abuse investigation unit commented on the case, stating, “This case has highlighted how the criminal justice system works to fight for the victims of such predatory individuals and demonstrates that victims will be believed and can ultimately achieve justice. Although no sentence could ever capture the suffering endured, I am impressed by the bravery and courage of the victims and witnesses in this case recounting their evidence in open court while facing their abuser, a predator of children.”
