WILLIAM BATE FROM BELFAST JAILED FOR CHILD PORN AND BESTIALITY IMAGES
In a case that has shocked the local community, William Bate, a 55-year-old resident of Belfast, has been sentenced to a 15-month prison term after being found guilty of possessing indecent images of children and extreme pornography, including images of bestiality. The conviction followed a trial held at Belfast’s Crown Court earlier this year, where the jury deliberated and returned a guilty verdict against Bate despite his persistent denial of the charges.
William Bate, who resides on Albertbridge Road in Belfast, was taken into custody and will serve seven and a half months behind bars.
The remaining portion of his sentence will be served on supervised licence, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct once released.
The case drew significant attention due to the disturbing nature of the evidence presented during the trial.
The investigation was initiated when police executed a search warrant at Bate’s East Belfast home.
During the search, authorities uncovered a troubling collection of digital material stored on his laptop.
The forensic analysis revealed a total of 269 images depicting children, with 50 of these classified in the two most serious categories of child exploitation material.
Additionally, investigators discovered 412 images of extreme pornography, including graphic content involving animals, which is classified as bestiality.
Throughout the proceedings, Bate attempted to deflect blame for the presence of these illicit images.
He claimed that the images might have been placed on his computer by others, including his elderly mother and a 12-year-old child, attempting to shift responsibility away from himself.
His legal representative, Mark Farrell, argued that the offending occurred over a limited timeframe, specifically between July 19 and July 23, 2009, and described Bate as “an isolated man without meaningful employment or a meaningful relationship in life.” However, Judge Corinne Philpott QC was unpersuaded by Bate’s defenses.
During sentencing, she criticized his lack of remorse and his refusal to accept responsibility.
The judge highlighted Bate’s attempts to exploit legal technicalities and his efforts to blame others, including those who set up his computer.
She described his conduct as “disgraceful” and emphasized the severity of his actions.
As part of the sentencing, Bate was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for ten years.
The judge also made it clear that Bate had shown “absolutely no remorse at any stage,” underscoring the gravity of his offenses and the impact on the victims and the community at large.
