WILFRED NOWELL FROM TYLDSLEY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS IN TYLDSLEY AND NEARBY AREAS
In a case that has shocked the community of Tyldsley, Wilfred Nowell, a 65-year-old pensioner, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed over a span of two decades. The court also mandated that Nowell serve an additional five years on extended licence following his release, a measure designed to monitor and prevent any further misconduct.Judge Nigel Gilmour, QC, presiding over the case at Liverpool Crown Court, emphasized the severity of Nowell’s actions. He ordered Nowell to register as a sex offender for life, citing a pre-sentence report that revealed a disturbing lack of remorse or insight from the defendant regarding the impact of his crimes. The judge noted that Nowell’s regrets appeared to be limited to his arrest and subsequent imprisonment, rather than the harm caused to his victims.
Wilfred Nowell, who has no prior convictions of a similar nature, pleaded guilty to a total of 14 counts of indecent assault. These offenses involved three young girls and spanned from March 1983 to October 2003, highlighting a disturbing pattern of abuse that persisted over two decades.
Prosecutor Anne Whyte provided details of the case, revealing that the earliest abuse involved a girl who was just 13 years old at the time. This abuse continued for approximately two years. The second victim was only seven years old when Nowell began abusing her, and this also continued for about two years. The most recent offenses involved a third girl, who was nine years old when the abuse started, lasting for roughly a year.
During the proceedings, defense lawyer Ben Jones highlighted that Nowell has been held in custody on remand and suffers from health issues. He also noted that Nowell’s wife is facing health problems, adding context to the defendant’s personal circumstances. Despite these factors, the court’s primary concern remained the protection of the community and the gravity of the crimes committed by Nowell in the town of Tyldsley and surrounding areas.
