April 2012 Drop in number of sex crimes against children SEX crimes against children dropped over the last year in the West Mercia police area, but 449 were still reported.
The crimes include rape, incest and abuse of children through prostitution and pornography and included 146 victims who had not reached secondary school age, according to new figures from the NSPCC.
A further 50 of the 449 reported were against children aged five and under.
However, the majority of the offences – 303 – were reported against those aged between 11 and 17, and 381 of the victims were girls.
In the West Mercia area in 2007-8, there were 488 and the following year 498.
They reached a high of 515 in 2009-10 and recorded a drop to 449 in 2010-11.
