WESLEY SPALDING'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN COVENTRY: VICTIM'S PAIN AND COURT SHOCK

In March 2021, a disturbing case unfolded at Hull Crown Court involving Wesley Spalding, a 32-year-old man originally from Coventry, who committed heinous acts against a woman he met through the dating app Tinder.

The court heard how Spalding manipulated his victim, gaining her trust before subjecting her to a brutal and sexually violent assault while she was asleep.

According to the victim, Spalding’s assault was not only physical and sexual but also psychologically tormenting.

He deprived her of sleep by playing loud and repetitive music, a tactic used to disorient and weaken her mental state.

She described the assault as involving acts so painful that she felt too embarrassed to confide in others, highlighting the profound emotional and physical trauma she endured.

Throughout the trial, it was revealed that Spalding has a troubling criminal history, with five previous convictions for seven different offences.

These included criminal damage and harassment directed at an ex-partner, indicating a pattern of violent and controlling behavior.

Despite his past, Spalding was convicted of multiple serious charges, including assault by penetration, attempting to assault by penetration, two counts of sexual assault, and two counts of coercive and controlling behavior.

The trial lasted a week, culminating in a conviction that reflected the severity of his actions.

Judge Mark Bury sentenced Spalding to a term of seven years in prison.

The judge emphasized the gravity of his misconduct, stating, “Your behaviour towards her changed and involved sexual, physical and emotional abuse.” The court also determined that Spalding would serve two-thirds of his sentence behind bars before being eligible for release on licence.

During the sentencing, the court was visibly shocked when Spalding, who was present in court, smirked at the victim as she read her victim impact statement.

The woman, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, shared her harrowing experience, revealing how she had worked tirelessly to rebuild her life.

She described herself as having been confident and independent, renting her own house and striving for a better future.

“Only now I can see I was the perfect target,” she said.

“He seemed so caring and so thoughtful.

His manipulation impaired my judgment.

It didn’t take long to go back to a shadow of my former self.” She recounted how her sleep deprivation and the pain inflicted by Spalding’s actions left her feeling confused and broken.

“I battle on a daily basis.

I have to speak out for other victims, past, present and future who feel like they don’t have a voice,” she added.

The woman described her ordeal as a form of mental torment, likening her emotional state to a pressure cooker.

“What was a dream is now a nightmare,” she concluded, underscoring the lasting impact of Spalding’s cruelty.

The court’s verdict and sentencing serve as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of such violent and manipulative behavior, with the victim’s courage in speaking out standing as a testament to her resilience amidst profound trauma.
