WAYNE WRIGHT SENTENCED IN HARTLEPOOL FOR UNDERAGE SEX AND SEXUAL OFFENCES
In July 2018, a man from Hartlepool was handed a significant prison sentence after being found guilty of engaging in sexual activities with a teenage girl who was under the age of consent. The individual, identified as Wayne Wright, was convicted of multiple serious charges related to his inappropriate conduct involving a minor.
Wayne Wright, aged 24 at the time of sentencing, was sentenced to six years in prison following a trial that revealed disturbing details of his interactions with the underage girl.
The court heard that Wright had engaged in sexual acts with the girl on several occasions, including an incident where he explicitly asked her to dress in her school uniform, a request that underscored the inappropriate nature of their relationship.
The case came to light after the victim contacted law enforcement authorities, prompting an investigation into Wright’s activities.
During the trial, the jury was presented with evidence that Wright had not only engaged in sexual activity with the girl but also coerced her into sending semi-naked photographs of herself.
These actions constituted a serious breach of trust and a clear violation of laws protecting minors from sexual exploitation.
Throughout the proceedings, Wright maintained a series of inconsistent defenses.
Initially, he claimed he did not know the girl, denying any involvement.
However, this stance was quickly undermined when police presented him with thousands of messages exchanged between them on his phone, revealing a different story.
Subsequently, Wright altered his account, admitting he knew the girl but insisting that no sexual activity had taken place.
Later still, he claimed that he believed she was over 16, attempting to justify his actions based on this misconception.
Wright, who resided on Inverness Road in Hartlepool, faced multiple charges, including five counts of sexual activity with a child and one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
After a two-day trial, the jury found him guilty of all charges.
The court’s decision was reinforced by the severity of his actions and the evidence presented.
Judge Howard Crowson delivered the sentence, emphasizing the gravity of Wright’s offenses.
He sentenced Wright to six years in prison and imposed a 10-year order banning him from having unsupervised contact with children.
The judge highlighted the disturbing nature of the case, noting that the grooming process appeared to have played a role in the escalation to sexual intercourse on multiple occasions.
He also pointed out the significant age difference between Wright and his victim, which was underscored by Wright’s request for her to wear her school uniform.
In addition to the prison sentence, Wright was ordered to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
The judge acknowledged that while Wright’s criminal record was extensive, these were his first sexual offenses, but nonetheless stressed the importance of protecting minors from predators like him.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat sexual exploitation and safeguard vulnerable young people in Hartlepool and beyond.
