WAYNE RUMBLE FROM HORNDON-ON-THE-HILL JAILED FOR PAEDOPHILE STING IN BASILDON

In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming and the vigilance of law enforcement, Wayne Rumble, a 51-year-old resident of Gordon Road in Horndon-on-the-Hill, has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in a paedophile-related incident. The case came to light after Rumble engaged in conversations with what he believed was a 14-year-old girl on social media platforms, ultimately leading to his arrest and conviction.

It was in July of the previous year that Rumble initiated contact with what he thought was a young girl on the social media site Skout. Unbeknownst to him, the entire interaction was orchestrated by a paedophile hunting group known as Cobra UK, which had set up a fake profile under the alias Zara Jones, portraying a 14-year-old girl. The group’s operation aimed to catch individuals attempting to exploit minors online.

During their online exchanges, the conversation between Rumble and the decoy gradually moved from Skout to WhatsApp, where the defendant’s intentions became increasingly explicit. Prosecuting lawyer Daniel Taylor explained that Rumble had asked the girl to send nude photographs and to engage in self-pleasure. The court was shown evidence that Rumble had even sent a diagram instructing her on how to pleasure herself, which was described as a disturbing line diagram detailing sexual acts.

Following the last contact on August 6 of the previous year, Cobra UK members took the initiative to visit Rumble’s home after locating his address online. They then contacted the police, who swiftly responded to the scene. Rumble was arrested at his residence and taken into custody. During police interviews, he chose to answer all questions with a silence of 'no comment.'

The court heard that there was a clear element of grooming involved, with a significant age disparity between the 51-year-old defendant and the 14-year-old decoy. Prosecutor Daniel Taylor emphasized the seriousness of the case, noting the manipulative nature of Rumble’s actions and the premeditated effort to engage a minor in sexual activity.

In his defense, Rumble’s legal representatives highlighted his employment background, mentioning that he works in the construction industry, holds forklift and digger licenses, and has previously worked as a karate instructor. They argued that he has a stable employment history and no prior criminal record.

Passing sentence, Judge John Lodge condemned Rumble’s conduct, stating, “You encouraged what you believed to be a young girl to masturbate for you so that you knew she was doing it. What makes this case particularly serious is that you sent a line diagram telling her what you wanted her to do. The conversations took place over a period of time.”

While acknowledging Rumble’s previous good character, the judge emphasized the gravity of his actions, which involved attempting to incite a minor to engage in non-penetrative sexual activity. Rumble was sentenced to two years in prison, with half of that time to be served behind bars. Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders register for ten years and subject to a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) for the same duration, reflecting the ongoing concern for public safety and the protection of minors from exploitation.
