WIGAN MAN SENTENCED TO 30 YEARS FOR BRUTAL AXE ATTACK ON GIRLFRIEND
A violent defendant, Wayne Ahearne, has been sentenced to three decades in prison following a gruesome incident of domestic assault. At 55 years old, Ahearne inflicted a savage attack on his partner, striking her so forcefully with an axe that the weapon became lodged in her skull.
This assault took place within her own residence, and the day before, he had issued a threatening message warning her, "You better get my money or I will cave your head in." The injured woman, aged 45, survived the brutal attack but sustained serious injuries, including a deep cut to her forehead, fractures to her face, broken ribs, injuries to her chest and back, and the partial amputation of her middle finger.
She recounted her trauma, stating, "Every time I close my eyes, all I can see is Wayne coming towards me with the axe." It was also revealed that Ahearne had previously assaulted her with punches and kicks, contributing to her injuries.
Prior to the axe assault, Ahearne threatened her and caused multiple injuries.
Witnesses reported overhearing him call her offensive names and warning her about money issues.
When police arrived at the scene, they found her in a critical condition with the axe embedded in her skull; Ahearne had fled but was later captured.
In court, Ahearne exhibited aggressive behavior, insulting the judge and hurling insults such as calling him a 'ba*****' and a 'paedophile.' The judge described the case as among the worst outside of murder cases, noting the brutality of the attack and emphasizing her chance of survival.
He was convicted of attempted murder and classified as a dangerous offender, with prior convictions for violence dating back to the 1980s.
He must serve two-thirds of his 30-year sentence before parole eligibility and has been sentenced to an extra three years on license.
The victim expressed her distress, stating, "Wayne Ahearne is a terrible man for what he has done to me," and detailed her ongoing mental health issues, including PTSD, night terrors, trauma, and incidents of collapsing when walking outside.
She depends heavily on her family and bears permanent scars from her injuries.
Her experience has left her deeply traumatized.
The court recognized the fear many people have of Ahearne, with some witnesses refusing to testify for safety reasons.
Nonetheless, the court praised those who bravely came forward with their testimonies.
