NOTTINGHAM MAN WITH 11 CONVICTIONS JAILED FOR ASSAULT AND ABUSE

Being continually abusive towards a police officer after assaulting a former partner led to a prison sentence for 36-year-old Warren Liburd.

Liburd had only three weeks previously been given a chance by a judge when he handed him a suspended sentence for attacking a former partner.

A court heard how on that occasion he dragged her from a sofa by her hair, grabbed her around the throat and “slammed her to the floor”.

But less than a month later he assaulted a different former girlfriend after she took pity on him and let him stay at her Nottinghamshire home.

On that occasion Liburd, of Canal Street, Nottingham, began strangling her in her bedroom.

Jailing him for 10 months, Judge Robert Egbuna said: “Much of your mitigation, put forward eloquently by your barrister, would have been heard by a previous judge who gave you a chance with a suspended sentence.

“Someone then offered to comfort you and within three weeks you assaulted her in the presence of children.

“Then, while on the way to the police station you were continually abusive towards a police officer.” Lucia Harrington, prosecuting at Derby Crown Court, said in July Liburd was handed a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

She said that offence saw him attack a former girlfriend.

Miss Harrington said following that conviction, a different ex-partner allowed him to stay at her home “on the condition he did not drink”.

But on August 6 that is precisely what he did and the couple began to argue.

Miss Harrington said the argument then escalated into Liburd calling the woman names and refusing to leave before he "grabbed her by the throat with both hands and began strangling her".

“She said she managed to defend herself but he grabbed a glass and smashed it on the floor.” Miss Harrington said Liburd did then leave and the victim called 999.

She said police arrived and he was found crouching behind some wheelie bins and arrested.

But on the way to custody he became abusive to one of the officers.

Miss Harrington said: “During the course of the journey he said ‘you’re not a real officer, you’re probably going to hit me aren’t you?

Go on hit me’" She said Liburd then continued to call the officer a series of derogatory names.
