WALTER RIPLEY OF TEYNHAM SENT TO PRISON IN MAIDSTONE FOR ONLINE GROOMING INCIDENTS
A delivery driver identified as Walter Ripley was caught in a sting operation by paedophile hunters at his workplace, which subsequently led to a confrontation.Ripley believed he was engaging in sex messaging with a 14-year-old schoolgirl named 'Poppy' via WhatsApp; however, he was actually communicating with a decoy from the group called Undercover and Expose.
The court was told that Ripley's case was delayed by three years due to staffing issues, his initial status as 'under investigation,' and disruptions caused by the pandemic.
Prosecutor Sophie Shotton commented, "The delay was caused by 'staffing problems', Ripley being 'released under investigation,' and then the pandemic." The 33-year-old was ultimately sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to four charges, including attempting to groom someone he believed was a minor with the intent of engaging in sexual activity and sharing explicit images.
Maidstone Crown Court heard how the offences were uncovered through the efforts of the online child abuse activity group Undercover and Expose.
Judge Philip Statman addressed Ripley directly, saying, "This group has individuals who are prepared to go online and act as decoys.
One of them called 'Poppy' engaged with you on WhatsApp.
She told you from the outset that she was 14 years old.
You were responsible, in graphic terms, for telling the decoy what you would like to do to her — although you made no attempt to meet her.
Despite that, Ripley, of Orchard View, Teynham, sent her a disturbing image and videos of himself expressing a desire to have sex with her." The judge continued, "You also sent voicemails of a sexual nature, disguising your identity by referring to yourself as Donald.
Members of this group confronted you at your work address, leading to a disturbance that called the police.
It is shocking that individuals like you can go into chatrooms and speak in this manner to others." The court also highlighted that Ripley, described as an "isolated and lonely individual," had experienced a difficult upbringing, with both parents having troubled histories with the law, including his father’s incarceration.
Following his arrest and confrontation by the paedophile hunters, Ripley was dismissed from his job and will now be registered as a sex offender for life.
Additionally, he has been issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order lasting ten years.
