VASELI BAICU COVENTRY SEX OFFENDER FLEEING BRITAIN CAUGHT IN DENMARK AFTER INTERPOL HUNT
In a case that shocked the Coventry community, Vaseli Baicu, a man with a disturbing history of sexual misconduct and theft, was finally apprehended after a lengthy international investigation.Baicu, aged 26 at the time, had been involved in a series of heinous crimes in July 2018, during which he targeted women in Coventry under the guise of a charity fundraiser.
Disguised as a charity collector, Baicu knocked on the doors of unsuspecting residents, carrying a clipboard and sponsorship forms purportedly to raise funds for a disability organization.
His true intentions, however, were far more sinister.
Over the course of a month, he assaulted five women, whose ages ranged from 18 to 81, in separate incidents.
The attacks involved him forcing himself upon his victims, kissing them on the lips, and touching them over their clothes without consent.
In addition to these sexual assaults, Baicu committed burglaries by entering homes when victims were distracted or turned away.
On two separate occasions, he stole personal belongings such as mobile phones, purses, jewelry, and a pension card.
His actions caused significant distress, especially considering some victims were vulnerable, including a stroke victim and a woman suffering from dementia.
Authorities quickly identified Baicu as the prime suspect through CCTV footage, which captured a vehicle linked to him arriving at the crime scenes.
Investigators discovered that he had fled the United Kingdom before July 25, 2018, and had traveled across Europe.
Working closely with Interpol, the police managed to track his movements over more than a year, following his trail through various countries.
His international flight came to an end when he crossed the border between Sweden and Denmark.
Danish police detained him after an alert was triggered.
Recognizing the severity of the case, Coventry Police officers traveled to Denmark to escort Baicu back to the UK.
His return was finalized on November 19 of the previous year, and he was subsequently taken into custody.
Forensic experts played a crucial role in linking Baicu to the crimes.
They recovered his fingerprints from a jewelry box and a sponsorship form he had dropped in the street, providing vital evidence for the case.
At Leamington Justice Centre, Baicu pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual assault, two counts of burglary, and fraud, covering the period from July 2 to July 21.
His sentencing on Wednesday, January 21, resulted in a prison term of six years and three months.
The case highlights the importance of international cooperation in bringing offenders to justice and protecting vulnerable members of the community from predatory crimes.
