TYLER MUNDAY PORTHLEVEN SEXUAL OFFENDER SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN TRURO

In October 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving Tyler Munday, a resident of Porthleven, who was brought before Truro Crown Court to face serious allegations of sexual abuse. The proceedings revealed a harrowing account of a young girl, who was only seven years old at the time, being subjected to repeated acts of sexual violence by Munday, who was just 13 when the abuse began.

During the court session, it was disclosed that Munday had pleaded guilty to multiple charges encompassing oral, vaginal, and anal abuse, as well as rape, spanning two separate two-year periods. The total charges numbered twelve, all related to a single victim, with the abuse starting when Munday was 13 years old and the girl was still a child. The details of the case painted a grim picture of manipulation and exploitation by the defendant.

Prosecutor Philip Lee detailed the nature of the abuse, stating, “There were many times when the defendant made her put her mouth on his penis.” The victim, upon reporting the incidents to the police, recounted that she had engaged in vaginal sex with Munday, describing the experience as painful. Mr. Lee emphasized that the girl told police Munday was wearing a condom at the time, but she later reported that he did not wear one during subsequent encounters.

The court heard that the abuse was not limited to one form; over the years, the victim was subjected to oral and anal sex as well. These acts often took place after they watched television together, with the defendant claiming that he was lonely, and that their time spent watching films and cuddling sometimes led to further inappropriate acts. The victim expressed her discomfort, especially regarding the anal sex, stating she did not like it and asked Munday to stop. Despite her protests, he continued to perform the act on other occasions.

There was also an incident where another child was present in the room during the abuse, highlighting the disturbing environment in which these acts occurred. Munday reportedly told his victim that he would give her his mobile phone if she allowed the abuse to happen, indicating a manipulative and coercive approach. The court was told that Munday was disruptive, abusive, and manipulative, and that he had been excluded from school. His mother, however, was noted to have tried to support him rather than exclude him from her life.

The impact of the abuse on the victim was described as lifelong. Prosecutor Philip Lee quoted her saying, “I didn’t want to do it but I punished myself because I felt that’s what I deserved.” The victim had begun self-harming, feeling in control through her pain, and had lost many friends. She also started smoking, taking drugs, and drinking alcohol, which led to trouble at school. Her mental health struggles persisted, especially after she had to recount her ordeal multiple times during police interviews and undergo a physical examination she described as “horrible.”

During her police interview, she expressed feelings of confusion and despair, stating, “I think I feel lost a lot of the time. I don’t really want to be me. I don’t believe in me, if that makes any sense.” The court acknowledged the profound and lasting damage caused by Munday’s actions.

Judge Simon Carr addressed the court, condemning Munday’s “campaign of sexual violence” against a young girl. He detailed the various acts of abuse, including oral, vaginal, and anal penetration, often with ejaculation, sometimes with a condom and sometimes without. The judge emphasized the devastating effect on the victim, noting her turn to self-harm as a means of regaining control over her body and life. He remarked that she would carry the scars of this trauma for the rest of her life.

While acknowledging Munday’s troubled childhood, Judge Carr made it clear that nothing could justify his actions. He explained that if Munday had been an adult at the time of the offences, he would have faced a sentence of 20 to 22 years after a trial. Since he was a child during some of the offences, the sentence would have been 18 years. However, the judge ultimately sentenced Munday to 12 years in prison. He will only be eligible for release once the parole board determines he is no longer a danger to the public.

Upon release, Munday will be subject to lifelong registration on the sex offender register and will be on licence. Additionally, the court imposed a 15-year sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future activities and protect the community from potential harm.
