TRISTAN SHUGHNESSY SENTENCED IN STOKE-ON-TRENT FOR FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH SEX OFFENDER REGULATIONS
Teenage sex offender Tristan Shaughnessy was found living in the same house as three children in Stoke-on-Trent.The 19-year-old had stayed at a neighbor's address for four days without notifying the police, breaching the conditions of his previous caution.
He also created a Facebook account under the name Jay Shaughnessy, which further violated the notification requirements of the sex offenders' register after he was given a conditional caution last September.
Shaughnessy, of Tiverton Road, Berryhill, was sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court to a 12-month community order and ordered to complete 60 hours of unpaid work.
Prosecutor Ben Lawrence explained that the defendant was cautioned on September 27 of last year, with conditions including not to stay more than 12 hours at any address with children without informing police, and to update them on any social media accounts.
Mr.
Lawrence stated, "The neighbor felt betrayed when she found out what had happened." Shaughnessy pleaded guilty to three counts of failing to comply with notification conditions.
Barry White, representing the defendant, said that Shaughnessy, who has ten siblings, did not commit any offenses while at the neighbor's house and is remorseful, understanding the importance of complying with the court order.
Judge Paul Glenn remarked, "You are 19.
It is a high time you grew up.
You pleaded guilty promptly, and the breaches are not the most serious of their type.
There is no suggestion you behaved inappropriately while staying with your next-door neighbor on a few occasions.
If you follow the terms of the notification requirements, you will not have any issues.
You must ensure the police are aware of any change of address or social media account creation.
I do not think these matters merit a custodial sentence." Shaughnessy was also ordered to pay costs of £150.
