TREVOR WYLIE FROM BELFAST FACES SERIOUS CHARGES IN DOWNPATRICK COURT
Trevor Wylie, a resident of Belfast, has been formally charged with two serious offences allegedly committed in October 2021. The charges stem from an investigation into inappropriate conduct involving a minor, although the details revealed during court proceedings have added layers of complexity to the case.Wylie, aged 40, appeared before Newtownards Court via a video link, where he faced accusations related to attempting to engage in sexual communication with an individual named Dylan. The prosecution alleged that Wylie sought to establish a sexual dialogue with Dylan for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification. Additionally, he was accused of attempting to incite Dylan into engaging in sexual activity. However, during the court proceedings, it was disclosed that Dylan was, in fact, an adult who had been posing as a minor, a detail that significantly impacts the context of the case.
The court heard that the defence acknowledged there was a prima facie case against Wylie, meaning there was sufficient evidence to proceed to trial. Wylie chose not to comment on the charges or present any evidence in his defence during the hearing. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, he was granted legal aid, which will assist in his defence at trial. Following the hearing, Wylie was released on bail, allowing him to await his trial outside of custody.
The case has been adjourned and is scheduled to be heard at Downpatrick Crown Court at a later date. The court's decision underscores the gravity of the charges and the ongoing legal process.
In terms of sentencing, the judge imposed a comprehensive order that includes a two-year probation period, during which Wylie will be under supervision. Additionally, he was ordered to complete 75 hours of community service. As part of the court's measures to monitor and prevent future offences, Wylie has also been placed on the sex offender register for a period of five years, reflecting the serious nature of the allegations and the court's commitment to public safety.
