EX-BBC PRESENTERS TONY AND JULIE WADSWORTH JAILED FOR SEX OFFENCES
Tony and Julie Wadsworth, a married couple and former BBC radio presenters, have each received a five-year prison sentence for indecently assaulting underage boys. The jury convicted them by majority verdict of encouraging six boys to participate in sexual acts between 1992 and 1996, as well as committing acts that outraged public decency by having sex outdoors in woodland.
Julie Wadsworth, aged 60, was found guilty of nine counts of indecent assault and five charges of outraging public decency, while Tony Wadsworth, aged 69, served as a lookout and was also convicted of the same offenses.
The victims, aged between 11 and 15, included some who witnessed the couple having sex outside, and one victim claimed to have had up to 15 sexual encounters with Julie Wadsworth during his teenage years.
The judge described the crimes as "grave" and noted they caused significant emotional harm to the victims.
The couple, residents of Broughton Astley, denied the allegations but were convicted after a three-week trial.
Evidence revealed that the victims were targeted at various locations such as the couple’s home, a golf course, and woodland.
The judge observed that the victims were young boys, some riding bikes or climbing trees in parkland, and highlighted that Julie Wadsworth enjoyed the attention of young boys, with her husband encouraging the misconduct.
The case attracted media attention due to the stark contrast between the couple’s public image and their private actions.
Authorities, including the police and NSPCC, condemned their behavior as child sexual abuse, and the BBC confirmed they are no longer employed by the organization.
