MORRISTON, SWANSEA: TOM WILKINSON

Wilkinson initially assaulted Jamie Evans using a log, a hockey stick, and a knife, then deliberately drove over and killed his dog in a malicious act of spite.

The confrontation between the two men escalated from a “verbal altercation” to violence when Wilkinson threw a log at Mr Evans from inside his van and then exited the vehicle armed with a hockey stick.

He struck Mr Evans on the side of the head with the stick.

A physical struggle ensued on the ground, during which Wilkinson produced a Stanley knife-style blade and slashed Mr Evans’s arm.

Believing the incident was over, Mr Evans got up and walked away along Cwmbath Road.

However, Wilkinson re-entered his van, accelerated toward him, then slowed as he approached, before speeding up again and running over the dog.

Mr Evans sustained injuries to his face and arm but did not seek medical treatment.

The injured spaniel was taken to a veterinarian, where it was found to have head trauma, internal injuries, and a suspected fractured spine.

The dog was “unresponsive but in pain,” and after receiving strong painkillers, it was decided, in consultation with Mr Evans and his family, to euthanize the animal.

In an impact statement read to the court by the prosecution, Mr Evans expressed that the death of his dog—who had been with him for about 12 years—left him feeling “numb and empty.” He explained that he used to walk the dog several times daily and now hesitates to leave the house without his companion.

He also mentioned experiencing a “burning” sensation on his arm from the slash wound.

Wilkinson admitted guilt to charges of causing grievous bodily harm, possessing a bladed weapon, and causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

He has a criminal record with 14 previous convictions covering 31 offenses, including burglary, theft, assaulting a police officer, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, public disorder, and being drunk and disorderly.

The court sentenced Wilkinson to 42 months in prison, with 21 months allocated for the animal cruelty offense.

He will serve up to half of this sentence in custody before being released on license to complete the remainder in the community.

There was no mention of a ban on owning animals.
