LABOUR COUNCILLOR TOM DEWEY AND SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CASE IN HAMPSHIRE AND HACKNEY

A former Labour councillor from Hackney has narrowly escaped imprisonment after admitting to possessing indecent images of children.

The case was heard at Wood Green Crown Court, where Judge Jonathan Ashley-Norman delivered his sentence.

The judge acknowledged the defendant’s efforts to address his offending behavior since his arrest, noting that Dewey had taken significant steps toward rehabilitation.

In his ruling, the judge sentenced Tom Dewey to a 12-month jail term, but this was suspended for a period of 12 months, meaning Dewey will not serve immediate time provided he maintains good conduct during this period.

The judge emphasized the profound and damaging impact Dewey’s actions have had not only on his life but also on his immediate family, highlighting the seriousness of the offences committed.

Dewey's early guilty plea and his attempts to work through his issues were considered as mitigating factors that influenced the court's decision.

Additionally, the court ordered that devices found in Dewey's possession be forfeited and required him to pay costs amounting to £500.

As a measure to prevent further harm, Dewey was also subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his contact with children and imposes conditions to reduce the risk of reoffending.

The background of this case reveals that Thomas Dewey, who was elected as a Labour councillor representing the De Beauvoir ward in Hackney, was apprehended by officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA).

The NCA agents conducted a raid at his residence on Hertford Road in Hackney just days before the local elections in May of the previous year.

During the search, the authorities seized multiple electronic devices, including laptops and tablets.

The court was informed that Dewey had a significant problem with viewing indecent images of children via the internet for personal gratification.

The analysis of his devices uncovered various images dating from between January 14, 2008, and April 27, 2022—just two days before his arrest.

Among the illegal content found, Dewey admitted to possessing and creating a total of five Category A images, which are classified as the most severe, as well as 41 Category B and 203 Category C images, indicating a range of severity.

Furthermore, Dewey pleaded guilty to possessing 78 extreme pornographic images of children, along with a total of 1,523 prohibited images stored on or before January 20, 2022.

These images included content classified under various grades of severity and were uploaded to personal cloud storage, specifically a Google Drive account linked to Dewey’s user ID, which had been identified through four CrimeTipline reports.

The authorities arrested Dewey at his home at approximately 7:03am, during which he was cautioned.

The materials seized included two laptops, two tablets, and a hard drive, all linked to his illegal activities.

The evidence strongly demonstrated that Dewey was the sole occupant of the property at the time of his arrest.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation images, as well as the importance of monitoring and addressing offenders who might hold public positions or have access to vulnerable individuals.

Despite his political career, Dewey’s actions have brought considerable shame and legal consequences, reflecting the serious nature of such crimes.
