Frome Child Sexual Abuser
In a case that has shocked the local community of Frome and the surrounding areas, Timothy John Tur, a retired teacher from Frome, has been found guilty of possessing and downloading a significant number of indecent images and videos depicting child abuse. The offences spanned over a three-year period, during which Tur was actively involved in tutoring children, raising serious concerns about the safety and oversight of his activities.
Tur, aged 67 and residing on Spring Gardens in Frome, appeared before the courts to admit to multiple charges related to the possession and creation of indecent images of children. The charges stem from incidents that took place between March 5, 2014, and April 12, 2017, in Axbridge. During this period, police investigations uncovered that Tur had made and stored numerous images, including 24 moving images and 34 still images classified as Category A, the most severe level of child abuse material. In addition, he admitted to creating six moving images and 25 still images in Category B, as well as three moving images and 151 still images in Category C, indicating a disturbing pattern of offending behavior.
Further compounding the severity of his crimes, Tur was found in possession of prohibited images of children on April 11 of this year, also in Axbridge. The police seized his computer equipment, which was subsequently ordered to be forfeited and destroyed, to prevent further distribution or access to such material.
At a hearing held in Taunton Crown Court last week, the court sentenced Tur to a two-year community order for each of the charges, with all sentences running concurrently. The court also mandated that he complete 40 days of rehabilitation activities, pay costs amounting to £500, and a victim surcharge of £60. Additionally, Tur was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years and will be required to register as a sex offender for the same period. These measures are designed to monitor and restrict his activities to protect the community from potential harm.
In a related hearing in December 2017 at Yeovil, Tur had already admitted to possessing and downloading hundreds of indecent images and videos of children. Prosecutor Christine Hart highlighted that some of these images were among the most serious category, emphasizing the gravity of the offences. She pointed out that Tur was still actively tutoring children during the period of offending, although not in a professional capacity, which raised additional concerns about his conduct.
The magistrates, after reviewing the evidence, deemed the offences to be extremely serious and decided that Tur should be transferred to Taunton Crown Court for sentencing. His case was adjourned until January 12, when he is scheduled to appear before a judge. A pre-sentence report prepared by the Probation Service will inform the court’s final decision.
As a result of his conviction, Tur was automatically placed on the national Sex Offenders Register, requiring him to sign the register within three days of the court hearing. Failure to comply with this requirement could result in imprisonment. Until his next court appearance, Tur remains on unconditional bail, but the community and authorities remain vigilant regarding his activities and the potential risk he poses.
