TIMOTHY SOPP'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN SWINDON: CHILD ABUSE AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SHOCK COMMUNITY
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the town of Swindon, Timothy Sopp, a 31-year-old man with a history of abusing young children, has seen his prison sentence significantly increased following revelations of his possession of a large collection of child abuse images.Sopp, who was previously convicted of sexually abusing three young boys, was initially sentenced in August to four years in prison for his heinous acts against the boys.
The court also imposed a four-year extended license period, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
However, the case took a further grim turn when authorities discovered that Sopp had stored thousands of indecent images of children on his computer.
The images, totaling an alarming 4,765, were found during a search of his device after his arrest.
These images spanned from late November 2005 to April of this year, indicating a prolonged period of possession and distribution of child exploitation material.
During the sentencing at Swindon Crown Court, Judge William Hart acknowledged the seriousness of the additional charges.
Sopp, who formerly resided on Sigerson Road in Haydon Wick, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of making indecent photographs of children and one count of possession.
The defense, represented by Alex Daymond, argued that if these offenses were considered in isolation, they would warrant a sentence of between one and three years.
He urged the court to take into account the totality of Sopp’s criminal behavior when determining the appropriate punishment.
In response, Judge Hart decided to extend Sopp’s custodial sentence by an additional four months, emphasizing the gravity of the child pornography found on his computer.
The judge explained that, had the images not been discovered, he would have imposed an eight-month sentence based solely on the guilty plea, but the presence of such material warranted a harsher penalty.
Beyond the possession of images, Sopp’s criminal history includes the sexual abuse of three young brothers, beginning when the youngest was just six years old.
The court heard that Sopp had ingratiated himself into the family, ostensibly to help the mother by babysitting her children to give her a break following her marriage breakdown.
However, his true intentions were far more sinister.
Sopp would claim to be assisting the mother by looking after the children on Friday nights at his home, where he would rent games for them to play on his Xbox console and bring food they liked.
Instead of innocent babysitting, he exploited the trust placed in him, abusing the boys while they played computer games.
His actions included indecent touching during these visits, which he carried out under the guise of caring for the children.
The case has left the community in shock, highlighting the disturbing extent of Sopp’s criminal activities and the vulnerability of the young victims involved.
