TUNBRIDGE WELLS PAEDOPHILE TIMOTHY SMITH SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN THE PHILIPPINES AND UK
In a case that has shocked the community of Tunbridge Wells, Timothy Smith, a 42-year-old man from Burslem Road, was convicted of a series of heinous child sex offences, including the filming of himself abusing a two-year-old girl in the Philippines.The sentencing took place at Maidstone Crown Court, where Smith received an extended prison term of 14 years, with a minimum of 10 years to be served before parole eligibility.
Judge Martin Joy, presiding over the case, described Smith as a significant danger to children, emphasizing the severity of his actions.
The judge stated, "There is no doubt you do pose a very great danger, a significant danger, to children." The case was brought to light after police investigations revealed the extent of Smith’s disturbing activities.
In November 2016, Kent Police executed a search warrant at Smith’s residence following reports of suspicious online activity.
During the raid, officers discovered more than 37,000 still images of child abuse stored on his hard drive, many of which were classified as Category A, indicating the most serious level of indecency.
Smith was subsequently arrested and interrogated, during which he admitted to having a sexual interest in young children and revealed that he had been offending for over a decade.
Further investigations uncovered that Smith had traveled to the Philippines in 2015, where he filmed himself abusing a child under the age of five.
He confessed to visiting the country specifically to carry out these acts.
The police also found evidence that Smith had repeatedly targeted his victim during 2015, saving videos of the abuse on his computer.
These videos, along with the thousands of indecent images, painted a disturbing picture of his ongoing predatory behavior.
Smith’s criminal record includes multiple charges, such as the sexual assault of a child in August 2013, and the distribution and creation of indecent images.
On November 9, he was convicted of three counts of sexual assault of a child between August and November 2015, three counts of distributing indecent images, three counts of taking indecent images, and six counts of making indecent images.
The court also found him guilty of sexual activity with a child in August 2013.
Judge Joy condemned Smith’s actions as “abhorrent,” highlighting the devastating impact on his victims.
One victim, in particular, had attempted to take her own life due to the trauma inflicted by Smith’s abuse.
The judge also expressed astonishment that Smith had been allowed to remain out on bail during the investigation, especially considering his history, which includes a caution in 1995 for the sexual assault of a child under four.
Smith has been ordered to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.
These revelations have cast a dark shadow over the community of Tunbridge Wells, where residents are now grappling with the knowledge of such a dangerous individual living among them.
The case underscores the importance of vigilant law enforcement and the ongoing fight against child exploitation and abuse, both locally and internationally.
