TIMOTHY ROBERTS SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS IN PRISON FOR SEX OFFENCES IN PRESTATYN

In a case that has shocked the community of Prestatyn, Timothy Roberts, a 44-year-old man residing on Exeter Close, was sentenced to a decade behind bars after being convicted of serious historic sexual offences involving young girls. The crimes, which took place over ten years ago, have left a lasting impact on the victims and have prompted a stern response from the judicial system.

During the court proceedings at Mold Crown Court, Roberts maintained his innocence and did not accept the jury's verdicts. He faced charges including attempted rape and sexual assaults against girls under the age of eight. Despite his protests, the jury found him guilty of these grave offences, leading to a significant sentence and lifelong restrictions.

In addition to the ten-year imprisonment, Judge Niclas Parry ordered Roberts to be placed on the sex offender register for the remainder of his life. Furthermore, a lifetime Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) was imposed, which severely limits his future interactions with children and explicitly prohibits him from approaching his victims again. The judge emphasized the severity of the crimes, describing them as very serious sexual offences committed against vulnerable young children.

One of the victims provided graphic testimony, recounting an attempted rape where she was clearly in pain and shouting out. The court heard that the victims had been forced to relive their traumatic experiences during the trial, a process that Judge Parry acknowledged as distressing. Roberts showed no remorse for his actions and received no credit for his plea, which was noted by the judge.

Judge Parry highlighted the significant age disparity between Roberts and his victims, underscoring the predatory nature of the offences. While acknowledging that Roberts was generally considered a man of good character, the judge pointed out that there had been no threats or violence used during the incidents, nor had there been any threats to silence the victims from reporting the crimes.

He described the attempted rape as a brief incident, noting that Roberts could have continued but chose not to. The judge also took into account that Roberts had not offended for the past ten years. Following an assessment by the probation service, the court was satisfied that a determinate sentence was appropriate in this case.

Roberts' defense lawyer, Simon Mintz, emphasized his client's good character and mentioned that Roberts struggled with learning difficulties and epilepsy, which would make serving his sentence particularly challenging. Mintz also expressed that Roberts found it difficult to accept the jury's verdicts from the trial in May, maintaining his innocence despite the conviction.
