TIMOTHY EDWARDS CAUGHT IN SWANSEA SEX OFFENDER SCANDAL INVOLVING ONLINE PREDATION
A man from Swansea, Timothy Edwards, has been exposed as a convicted sex offender who engaged in disturbing online communications with a person he believed to be a 12-year-old girl.In reality, Edwards was interacting with an undercover police officer, a fact that came to light during a court hearing.
According to court records, Edwards attempted to conceal his identity by using a false name and an unremarkable profile picture of a cat on his social media accounts.
The image, which was actually a photograph of his family’s pet taken inside their conservatory at their Swansea residence, was part of his online persona.
The court revealed that Edwards had begun sending sexually explicit messages and images to the decoy just weeks after he had been handed a suspended prison sentence for possessing indecent images of children.
Prosecutor Alycia Carpanini explained that in May 2024, Edwards received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and was subjected to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO).
This order mandated that Edwards must inform police of any internet-enabled devices he owns and prohibited him from creating or maintaining social media accounts or online profiles under any name other than Timothy Edwards or other approved aliases.
The court emphasized that Edwards had previously been convicted of making indecent images of children, which contributed to the severity of his current restrictions.
Further details from the court indicated that in June of the same year, Edwards initiated contact with a profile on the Kik messaging platform, claiming to be a teacher from Bristol.
His profile, which featured a black cat as the picture, was used to communicate with the decoy, who he believed was a 12-year-old girl.
During their exchanges, Edwards claimed he was glad it was the summer holidays and falsely stated he was not a teacher at her school, although he mentioned he would remember teaching a “cute young lady” like her.
As the conversation progressed, Edwards began making suggestive remarks and requested explicit images.
He promised to reciprocate if she sent him a provocative photo.
The court heard that Edwards then sent the decoy several explicit images of his erect penis, including one taken immediately after ejaculation.
He continued to send sexual messages, expressing a desire to be her teacher and offering to give her private sex education lessons.
The decoy responded by sending a picture of a girl in a school shirt and tie, to which Edwards responded with compliments and explicit comments about unbuttoning her shirt.
He also asked her for a selfie to use as a background on his phone and requested topless or bra-clad images.
On August 15, police officers executed a search at Edwards’ Swansea home.
After being cautioned, Edwards admitted that a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was in the house and that his wife knew its location.
The officers located and seized the device, which contained an email account under the username ThomWayne500.
This account had correspondence from Kik, Telegram, and Instagram platforms.
Investigations revealed that the black cat profile picture used on Kik was likely a photograph of Edwards’ family cat, taken inside their Swansea home.
Additionally, the background details in the explicit images Edwards sent matched his bedroom at the residence, confirming the origin of the photographs.
Edwards, aged 24 and residing on Cwmgelli Road, Morriston, Swansea, had previously pleaded guilty to charges including breaching a sexual harm prevention order, attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child (a charge of attempt, as no real child was involved), and sending explicit images intended to cause alarm or distress.
His prior convictions included possession of indecent images of children across categories A, B, and C.
In sentencing, Recorder Greg Bull KC sentenced Edwards to 15 months in prison for the recent offenses.
The court also activated his previous eight-month suspended sentence, making the total custodial period 23 months.
A new 10-year sexual harm prevention order was imposed, requiring Edwards to register as a sex offender for the next decade.
The court’s decision underscores the ongoing concern over Edwards’ predatory behavior and the measures taken to protect the public from further harm.
