TIFFANY ECCLES AND JOHN MILLS SENTENCED FOR ABUSE IN MANCHESTER

A tragic case of long-term sexual abuse has led to the imprisonment of Tiffany Eccles, 27, and John Mills, 38, both from Bury in Greater Manchester, for a combined total of more than 26 years.

The heinous acts they committed involved the systematic grooming and sexual exploitation of two young girls over several years, with details of their cruelty unfolding during a court hearing at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester.

The disturbing investigation revealed that Eccles and Mills subjected the victims to horrific acts of assault and manipulation.

Mills, a landscape gardener by profession, was found to have raped the first girl on at least five occasions.

During these instances, he not only assaulted her but also involved her in disturbing group activities where they played adult-themed games such as spin the bottle while naked.

These sessions often culminated in Mills raping the girl and forcing her to watch Eccles engage in sexual acts with him.

The first victim’s ordeal began when Mills, who had befriended her father, targeted her during a family camping trip attended by the defendant, the victim, her father, and other acquaintances.

According to court records, Mills started molesting the girl when she was just eight years old.

The prosecution explained that he initially began with inappropriate touching over her clothing.

Despite her attempts to escape, Mills would physically silence her by pulling his hand across her face and telling her to be quiet, cautioning her with the words, “Shh!

don’t do that.” The girl was too frightened to disclose the abuse at the time, fearing she would be punished or that she would get into trouble for what was happening to her.

The abuse escalated further when Mills took her to a shop in his car, where he procured condoms.

On returning from this outing, Mills drove down a rural country road, instructed her to lie down in the back of his vehicle, and subsequently raped her.

This traumatic event occurred in the presence of passing motorists—teenage boys who happened to arrive on the scene and believed she was older than she was, which led Mills to drive away quickly.

Disturbingly, Mills also raped her at his home on a sofa and in various other settings, while Eccles was aware of the abuse but was asleep during some of these incidents.

Further details emerged during the trial, including how Mills manipulated the girl into participating in a series of sexual acts, often telling her she had to stay with Eccles until Mills returned from work.

When Mills was home, the abuse continued in a setting where they would drink alcohol together, culminating in a disturbing group activity involving both Mills and Eccles engaging in sex acts in front of the girl, who was made to watch.

Mills’s manipulation was clear when he told her to “watch this,” as he and Eccles had sex, with Mills later joining in.

The girl also recounted how Mills described Eccles and himself as “two different people”—one friendly and the other abusive.

The second victim, also a girl from Manchester and now a teenager, came forward after the initial arrest.

She described a horrifying incident at a house where Eccles undressed in front of Mills and instructed her to do the same as part of what she described as a “game.” Eccles then engaged in sexual activity with Mills in front of her in what she described as a demonstration.

The victims' mothers provided emotional statements in court, revealing the profound heartbreak and ongoing trauma caused by their daughters’ experiences.

In defense, Eccles’s solicitor, Anna Chestnutt, argued that her client had entered into the relationship with Mills when she was only 18 and that her actions were largely under his influence.

The defense claimed Eccles had suffered emotional and psychological abuse at Mills’s hands, which left her trapped and afraid, with Mills manipulating her through threats and intimidation.

John Mills openly expressed remorse in a written statement, acknowledging the pain his actions had caused.

“I know I caused a great deal of trauma, hurt, and pain to a great many people.

I can't take back what I have done and make it right but I wish I could,” he stated.

The court heard that Mills's phone contained evidence of him filming Eccles having sex with another man, adding to the evidence of his disturbing behavior.

The victims detailed their suffering in personal statements, with one saying, “What you did to me was sick and you both deserve everything coming your way.

You’ve destroyed my life but I will not be silenced any longer.” The second girl described her ordeal as “horrific,” noting how Mills and Eccles disregarded her feelings and manipulated her.

Judge Bernadette Baxter condemned the defendants’ actions, emphasizing that there was no safe space or sanctuary for the children within their care.

She highlighted the long-lasting psychological impact their depravity inflicted, affecting the victims’ confidence, self-esteem, ability to trust others, mental health, and even their will to continue living.

Both Eccles and Mills were sentenced to significant imprisonment terms: Mills received 19 years and three months after admitting multiple charges, including rape, sexual assault, and causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

Eccles was sentenced to seven years and two months after pleading guilty to engaging in sexual activity in front of a child under 13 and inciting sexual acts.

Furthermore, both offenders are now required to register as sex offenders and are subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

They are also prohibited from making contact with the victims following the issuance of restraining orders.

Following Mills’s release after serving his sentence, he will remain on license until 2043 under an extended sentence, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the risk he poses to society.

The court’s verdict and sentences serve as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of such abuse, with the community in Manchester appalled by the cruelty inflicted upon these innocent victims.
