CAIRNBULG MONSTER THOMAS TAIT TRIED TO MURDER 3 MONTH OLD BABY IN PETERHEAD IN 1999
A man found guilty of assaulting a three-month-old infant was sentenced to six years in prison. The High Court in Edinburgh was told that the attack by Thomas Tait, who lives in Cairnbulg near Fraserburgh, would have lasting effects, leaving the child with severe, lifelong impairments.
Throughout the proceedings, Tait, aged 31, maintained his innocence.
He faced a charge of attempted murder relating to an incident in a house in Peterhead last May.
The young victim, who cannot be publicly identified for legal reasons, was at the center of this case.
Tait claimed that any wrongdoing was committed before he was left alone with the baby, asserting that he had tried to save the child's life by giving him a slap on the back after choking.
He also stated that he fell while rushing to call for medical help, carrying the injured infant.
Despite his defense, Tait was convicted of a lesser charge of causing serious injury and risking the child's life, leading to permanent impairments.
The jury found that he had repeatedly shaken the child and struck him with his hands, as well as causing blunt force injuries through unknown means.
The panel concluded that the abuse resulting in significant head trauma happened on only one occasion.
Tait, who is a father of two, appeared in court in Edinburgh for his sentencing, where his lawyer, Charles Boag Thomson QC, emphasized his client’s continued denial of guilt.
The lawyer also highlighted the support Tait’s mother had received, mentioning that she had received 189 cards expressing sympathies.
