NORTHFIELD MAN BANNED AFTER NEGLECTING DOG WITH CANCEROUS TUMOUR
A man named Thomas Nicholas Powell was brought to justice after his German Shepherd, Sadie, was found to be suffering from a large, malignant tumor and had endured more than a month of pain without veterinary treatment.
Sadie was discovered wandering in the Northfield area by a member of the public and was taken to a veterinarian, who then contacted the RSPCA due to the animal’s critical condition.
Veterinary examination revealed Sadie was underweight, with a stiff gait, muscle wasting, and a sizable, ulcerated mammary tumor approximately 15cm in size.
This tumor was diagnosed as a stage 3 mammary carcinoma, a form of malignant cancer.
Surgery was performed to remove the affected tissue.
Powell stated he was deeply sorry and claimed to love Sadie, explaining he hadn’t noticed the lump because of her long fur.
He admitted to violating animal welfare laws by neglecting her pain and suffering, not securing veterinary care, and not providing enough food.
The Birmingham Magistrates’ Court sentenced him on June 4 to a six-month community order with ten days of rehabilitative activities.
He was also banned from owning animals for ten years, a restriction he cannot challenge for five years.
The offense took place between December 31 and February 11 that year.
