EDINBURGH CHILD RAPIST THOMAS NELSON SENTENCED FOR DEPLORABLE SEX CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Edinburgh, Thomas Nelson, a man with a long history of sexual offenses against children, was sentenced to an additional six years in prison on Thursday.This sentencing follows the revelation of past heinous crimes committed nearly four decades ago, which only recently came to light during a court trial.
Nelson, aged 57 and a former soldier, was found guilty of abusing an 11-year-old girl and engaging in a serious sexual act with a young boy when he was just five or six years old.
The crimes took place in various locations around Tullibody, a town in Clackmannanshire, including an address in the town, a park, and open ground in the nearby Ochil hills.
The abuse against the girl occurred between November 1979 and November 1980, while the incident involving the young boy happened earlier, between July 1978 and the summer of the following year.
The court heard that Nelson’s actions were not isolated but part of a pattern of predatory behavior during that period.
Further details revealed that Nelson committed a serious indecency offense against the boy during a single incident on a farm road outside Tullibody.
During this incident, he removed his lower clothing, indicating the severity and depravity of his actions.
The jury at the High Court in Edinburgh convicted Nelson of two indecency offenses against the children and an assault on the girl.
It was also disclosed that Nelson was already serving a 12-year prison sentence for other acts of physical and sexual violence committed against different young victims.
The court was informed that Nelson had used intimidation and fear to silence his victims, ensuring they did not report his crimes for many years.
Lady Wise, presiding over the case, described Nelson’s past convictions as involving a “deplorable series of offences against children.” She emphasized that Nelson appeared to have carefully planned and executed his abuse in the late 1970s, causing lasting trauma to the victims.
As part of his sentence, Nelson was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely, and the judge made it clear that his current six-year sentence would run consecutively to his existing prison term.
It was also highlighted that Nelson had previously been jailed in 2017 at the same court for a string of offenses against children, including rape and facilitating the rape of a child by others.
Over a decade, beginning in the mid-1990s, Nelson abused four young victims in houses located in the Granton, Broomhouse, and Wester Hailes areas of Edinburgh, as well as at an address in Clackmannanshire.
During these horrifying episodes, he not only sexually abused children but also facilitated others in doing so.
One particularly disturbing act involved Nelson providing a girl aged between four and six to other men for sexual acts, and he himself engaged in intercourse with her.
He also assaulted two boys, one of whom had a gun pressed to his head and hot spoons applied to his skin, illustrating the extreme violence and cruelty involved.
Defense counsel Tim Niven-Smith acknowledged that further imprisonment was inevitable given Nelson’s extensive criminal history.
However, he pointed out that at the time of the crimes against the girl and boy, Nelson was still a teenager, which added a layer of complexity to the case.
In a separate but equally disturbing case from July 2017, Nelson, then aged 54, was convicted of raping a five-year-old girl and allowing other paedophiles to have access to her for sexual purposes.
The court heard that Nelson’s conduct was utterly appalling, with Lord Uist describing his actions as “particularly despicable.” Nelson was found guilty of six charges, including providing the young girl to other men for sex and engaging in sexual acts with her himself.
He was sentenced to 12 years in prison for these offenses.
During the trial, the court was shown footage of the now 19-year-old victim recounting her traumatic experiences.
She described how Nelson and his friends inflicted physical injuries, including bruises and marks, and subjected her to sexual abuse from the age of five.
She recounted her fear and silence, revealing that Nelson’s threats and violence kept her from speaking out for years.
The victim detailed how she was tied up with a rope during one assault and how she was too young to understand what was happening, describing her feelings of helplessness and terror.
The court also heard that Nelson’s abuse extended to other children, including a girl in 2006 and 2007, and involved neglect, exposure to drugs, and weapons.
The judge condemned Nelson’s conduct as “particularly unpleasant and distasteful,” emphasizing the gravity of his crimes and the lasting damage inflicted on his victims.
Nelson’s history of violence and sexual offenses paints a picture of a man who repeatedly preyed on vulnerable children over many years, leaving a trail of trauma and suffering in his wake.
His sentencing underscores the seriousness with which the justice system views such heinous crimes and the ongoing threat posed by individuals like Nelson to society.
