WEST DENTON MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL DOMESTIC STRANGULATION AND ASSAULT
Thomas Huntington, a 37-year-old man from West Denton, was convicted of physically abusing his former partner over a period of time. His actions included strangling her on two separate occasions, which resulted in her requiring hospital treatment.
The court heard that Huntington would sometimes tell his victim to look into his eyes to see that 'nice Tom was back' and 'nasty Tom had gone' after violent outbursts.
In one incident on June 13, 2024, Huntington grabbed her by the throat and accused her of ruining his life after she found him watching pornography, which he claimed he no longer did.
He then left home threatening to kill himself.
When he returned, he continued to assault her, twisting her wrist so badly that she thought it would break, and then punched her in the face, causing a bloody nose.
During another argument, Huntington pinned her against the front door, lifting her off the ground by her neck, causing her to feel like she could not breathe and believing she would die.
She was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary with neck pain, loss of vision, and numbness in her arm.
Despite her injuries and the evidence, Huntington denied the abuse, but he later pleaded guilty at Newcastle Crown Court to charges of occasioning actual bodily harm and intentional strangulation.
On February 24, he was sentenced to two years and six months in prison, with half the sentence to be served behind bars.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay a victim surcharge and was issued a restraining order.
During sentencing, it was noted Huntington's previous conviction was for a driving offence, and his lawyer highlighted that he suffers from anxiety and had shown concern for his partner following the incidents.
