Alloa Sexual Abuser
In a case that has shocked the community, Thomas Gold, a 45-year-old resident of Alloa, was sentenced to a total of six years and eight months in prison at the High Court in Edinburgh for grooming and sexually abusing a young boy. The heinous acts took place over several years, beginning when the victim was just seven years old.

Gold, who was unemployed at the time, had taken the young boy out for canvassing activities on behalf of the Jehovah's Witnesses and had also brought him to the Kingdom Hall. The abuse occurred at a house in Tullibody, a nearby town, between November 1996 and November 2003. During this period, the victim was subjected to repeated acts of indecency by Gold, who exploited his position of trust and the boy's innocence.

It was only when the boy reached his teenage years that he confided in elders at his church about the abuse he had endured. The church leaders responded by informing Gold that his behavior was unacceptable and warned him that continued misconduct could lead to his expulsion from the church, a process known as 'dis-fellowshipping,' especially given the church's disapproval of homosexual conduct. The elders also urged Gold to report the matter to the police, but it appears that no immediate action was taken at that time.

During the court proceedings, advocate depute Alison Di Rollo emphasized the profound impact of Gold's actions on the victim. The judge, Lord Bannatyne, acknowledged the severity of the case, noting that a background report had described Gold's conduct as 'systematic grooming' aimed at sexually abusing the young boy. The judge highlighted that Gold's criminal behavior had caused significant emotional and psychological harm to the victim.

Gold's defense solicitor, Brian Gilfedder, expressed that it was difficult to offer mitigation for such a serious offense. He stated, “As far as the offence is concerned it is very difficult for me to stand here and say anything that could be described as mitigation. The accused is well aware and has been well aware that this was wrong. It is accepted by him that a sentence of imprisonment is inevitable.”

Following his conviction, Gold was ordered to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life. Additionally, he was sentenced to a supervision period of 40 months after completing his prison term, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct to prevent further offenses. The case has left a lasting scar on the community of Alloa and the surrounding areas, highlighting the importance of vigilance and accountability in safeguarding vulnerable individuals from abuse.
