THOMAS GLASSEY SHOCKS BELFAST WITH RACIST ATTACK AND VIOLENCE ON CHILD ON SHANKILL ROAD

In April 2019, a disturbing incident unfolded on Belfast's Shankill Road involving Thomas Glassey, a 36-year-old man whose actions shocked the local community and prompted legal action.

The events began earlier that day when Glassey was seen in the area engaging in provocative and indecent behavior, repeatedly dropping his trousers in full view of passersby, including motorists and pedestrians.

This bizarre display was only the prelude to a more serious and violent episode that would leave a lasting impact on those involved.

Shortly thereafter, Glassey targeted a mother and her eight-year-old son, both of foreign nationality, who were simply walking along the busy street.

According to court reports, Glassey shouted racial slurs at them, specifically uttering the offensive phrase, “N*****, n*****, this is my country,” in a clear display of racial hostility.

Witnesses described how Glassey’s abuse escalated as he approached the victims, continuing to shout and threaten, which caused significant fear and distress to the mother and her child.

As the woman attempted to push Glassey away to protect her son, he suddenly moved behind her and delivered a punch to the back of the young boy’s head.

The assault was witnessed by several bystanders who quickly intervened, attempting to de-escalate the situation and assist the victims.

Police were called to the scene, and Glassey was promptly arrested.

During police interviews, Glassey admitted to having consumed three large bottles of vodka and prescription medication in the days leading up to the incident.

He claimed to have no memory of the events that transpired but denied any racist intent, despite the racial abuse and assault.

Legal proceedings revealed that Glassey immediately pleaded guilty to charges of indecent behavior and two counts of common assault.

His defense lawyer, Stewart Evans, emphasized that Glassey had shown remorse, apologizing to the victims and acknowledging his wrongdoing.

Evans also highlighted that Glassey’s actions were out of character and largely fueled by alcohol consumption.

Furthermore, the lawyer pointed to an IQ assessment placing Glassey in the bottom 0.4 percent of the population, suggesting social isolation and questioning his capacity for malicious intent.

However, the court was unequivocal in condemning Glassey’s conduct.

Deputy District Judge Austin Kennedy described the behavior as “appalling and shocking,” emphasizing the need for the courts to take a firm stance against such actions.

He noted that Glassey’s indecent behavior, racial abuse, and assault on an innocent young child could not be tolerated.

As a result, Glassey was sentenced to three months in prison, with an additional month to be served by activating a previously suspended sentence for disorderly conduct.

The judge warned that until Glassey demonstrated genuine remorse and changed his behavior, he would face increasingly longer periods behind bars, underscoring the seriousness with which the court viewed this incident and its implications for community safety.
