EDINBURGH MAN THOMAS CARROLL CAUGHT WITH THOUSANDS OF CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the Edinburgh community, Thomas Carroll, a 58-year-old resident of the city, has been found guilty of possessing an extensive collection of child abuse images. The authorities revealed that Carroll had been engaged in this heinous activity over a period of nearly four years, during which he downloaded and stored more than 2,800 explicit images depicting children being sexually exploited by adults.
Among these images, there were numerous instances of rape, highlighting the severity and depravity of his actions.
Further investigations uncovered that Carroll also accessed a total of 634 videos related to child abuse.
Alarmingly, more than half of these videos were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe and vile content available within the spectrum of illegal material.
The case came to light after police received intelligence in November of the previous year, indicating that such illicit images were being accessed from Carroll’s residence in the Wester Hailes area of Edinburgh.
On December 20, police officers executed a search warrant at Carroll’s home around 8:15 in the morning.
When they arrived, they found Carroll alone at the property.
During the search, authorities seized two mobile phones, two USB devices, and a laptop.
A subsequent cybercrime investigation revealed that these devices contained thousands of indecent images of children, confirming the extent of Carroll’s illegal activities.
At Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Fiscal depute Jennifer McLaren detailed the findings, stating that a total of 2,823 images and 634 videos of child sexual abuse had been stored on the seized devices.
The court was informed that Carroll had pleaded guilty to possessing these indecent images at his home between January 9, 2019, and December 20 of the previous year.
Judge Ian Anderson ordered that Carroll be placed on the Sex Offenders Register, with the duration of this registration to be determined at a later date.
The court also deferred sentencing to allow for the preparation of social work reports, which are scheduled for next month.
Despite the serious nature of the charges, Carroll was granted bail.
When leaving the court, he attempted to conceal his identity by wearing a face mask, a move that drew attention from onlookers.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement in Edinburgh to combat child exploitation and highlights the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable children from such heinous crimes.
