KIRKCALDY MAN GETS LIFE FOR BRUTAL ATTACK ON ELDERLY WOMAN
Thomas Brogan, aged 46, was found guilty of killing Georgina Barnett, a 90-year-old woman who lived alone in Kirkcaldy.
The incident took place on 25 June 2013, when Brogan became angry over his malfunctioning mobile phone and attacked Mrs.
Barnett.
The assault was described as brutal and continued over a period of time, resulting in serious injuries including a brain injury, bruises, cuts, and 11 fractured ribs and sternum.
Her body was discovered with significant facial injuries and bloodstains on a wall.
She was taken to hospital but died five days later.
Having previously admitted to the murder, Brogan was sentenced to life imprisonment at Edinburgh's High Court.
The sentencing judge, Lord Pentland, stated that Brogan had 'utterly lost control' and carried out 'a vicious and sustained attack on a vulnerable elderly lady.' Brogan was ordered to serve at least 18 years before being eligible for parole, and was classified as highly dangerous.
The victim’s nephew, Thomas Johnston, described Brogan as 'an animal' and noted relief that he would not be eligible for release until he was 60.
The attack was considered unprovoked and alcohol-fueled, and Mrs.
Barnett was remembered as a greatly loved community member, with her family shattered by her death.
